Is a car cover detrimental when car wet?

I don;t have a garage and it ain't stopped raining for a while now. I;m concerned about car rusting away!!
I have a car cover but can only use it over night really, is it worth it and if I come home from work and put cover on when car wet would it accelerate corrosion underneath cover?

Hi Simon, never put a cover on wet car, better to have no cover than that, be carefull what type of cover you use as my stag has suffered under cover with paint bleaching. Martin.

        I use one of these:
Five Layers Thick - Giving Almost Total Protection against the elements Super soft inner fleece lining is anti-scratch, even in high winds All outdoor car cover materials are non- hydroscopic - so they do not absorb moisture.

Click the 'more information' button. Ok to put on a wet car.

The TSSC are selling them, but more expensive then Hamiltons!,:?. Just ordered one from Hamiltons £161.00 inc delivery.

          Sukh.

I have seen a few cars (my own inlcuded!)where the paint has micro blistering, which can happen when moisture is trapped. I am not sure I would trust any waterproof cover to be safe from this. I think a cover is good to stop heavy rain getting in, but dont leave it on too long. Let the car dry out regularly if possible.

Better still, put on a hard top in the winter.

I would have thought one problem is the cover pulling grit and dirt which is held by the water over the paint and scratching it.

              Cheers Steve

I have two external covers and the Hamiltons one is clearly the best.

Even though it says it can be put on wet, I never do.

Also, make sure that the car is clean because, as Steve says, it causes abrasion. Also, the dirt will be in the fleecy lining, so washing the car doesnt get rid of the problem.

I wouldnt use one at all if the car didnt have a very good coating of wax or similar. It should help in stoppingmoisture getting into the paint.

Looked at this and then my attention got diverted - not hard - by their marquees.

Although they are quite a bitmore expensive, I am quite tempted byone of these (complete with sides)as, hopefully, it will keep therain off; there's no chance of scratching it, as there is with a cover, and I may be able to work on the car under it.

                  Any thoughts or experiences anyone?

                  Cheers

We have one of those Hamiltons covers for our GT6. Excellant purchase and highly recommended.

Our GT6 lives outside and is used by my wife as her daily transport. We fit the cover every evening as its Webasto roof has a leak which I have yet to get around to fixing.

In the depths of winter its not always practical to dry the car off before fitting the cover i.e. you get home from work and its been raining all day and its not forecast to stop, then the cover has to be fitted onto a wet car. The Hamilton is a breathable cover and the car drys out within a few hours.

Its ever so good in the winter to take the cover off to find the car windscreen not steamed up.

Why not, Bruce? What else have you been doing........?

On the subject of covers; this may seem obvious, but with any that are attached by means of bungee cord and hooks, please be careful. I have one that I bought many years ago to cover the windows of my family hatchback.

A few years back, my son was commuting to college on a daily basis and decided to use it to allow himself a few minute's extra lie-in instead of spending time scraping frost off the windscreen.

One morning he probably wasn't fully awake and as he unhooked one of the cords from a wheel it pinged back and caught him in the eye. He was lucky. No permanent damage, but a day at the eye hospital, plenty of painand several more visits over the next couple of years for check-ups.

He has never used the cover since............. It could have ruined his career as a golf pro.

I think i have said before - I have one of these - it is excellent, and i would buy another.

With everyday-use i expect mine to last a couple of years, maybe 3, but i view it as a comsumable. Yes i put it onto the car if wet ........ can't detect any change in paintwork.
