    Bonnet Release

Having learned from somebody elses misfortune, I fittted an emergency bonnet release to my TR6 today - works a treat. If the cable snaps, you're stuffed, so I'm planning to fit something similar to the Stag. The Stag mechanism is almost identical, but as you'll see from the TR6 pic below the rod activated bit is not so easy to achieve. Has anybody fitted such a back-up device?

This was debated a few year's back on TSN. Quite a few owners fitted a second one on the drivers side to give an either side release. A picture of one of the modifications was posted here:

If it does break you have to drill a hole in the nearside inner wing and poke about witha broom handle

Now you've got me worried..... a snapped cable would be seriously problematic....

So now I have to add another thingto the list longer than Magna Carta..... thanks boys... I think......

          Hi Bill,

I too heard horror stories about cables breaking, so made my own. It's a bowden cable, and fits on the opposite side of the latch. It then goes through an existing hole in the bulkhead, and ends as a ring-pull in the drivers foot well.

I personally know of one owner who hada cablebreak. He managed to open the bonnet by removing a headlamp & bowl, and did a lot of stabbing about in the general direction of the latchwith a long broom handle. There are better ways to spend a Saturday!

A neater solution is to buy another original type bonnet pull. There are mounting holes under either side of the dashboard so just fit the second pull as a mirror image of the fitted one. There are various ways of fixing it to the underbonnet catch. I can't post a picture of my solution at present as I am away from my photo library.

As anybody who's owned a push bike will know, bowden cables don't last forever!

Having said that much less force is required to open the Stag than my TR6 bonnet, but when they go it's a real bugger to fix and of course it always happens at the worst possible moment e.g. when you've just mysteriously coasted to a halt at the roadside! :?

On a similar subject, what about the hood stowage/hard-top release cables, anyone had any of these snap on them?

                            Mike.

There has been some discussion on an earlier thread, if a cable snaps you can hoik out the rear seat and get to the catch. I had to do this when mine jammed although the cable was OK.
