    speedometer - intermittent failure

A week ago the speedometer on my Stag started to occasionally not work at all, but did work most of the time.

Now the needle gives a blip when I'm in 1st gear, but as soon as I change up to 2nd and so on it just reads zero = not even a twitch. The cable was new about 2000 kilometres ago.

Any hints on how to find out where the problem is?

    Many thanks Neil

Could be something simple like its just coming unscrewed at the back of the speedo or at the gearbox end. The outer fixing could still be in place but not screwed up tightly enough to pull the inner cable in properly.

Hope it's that but, if not then, as I can't see how a cable could be broken one minute then ok the next, I suspect the problem would be inside the gearbox.

I haveseen thecable coming loose at the back of the speedo before so I hope, for your sake, it's that.

    Cheers

      Hi Julian

How about when youChange from first to second it takes the tension/stretch out of the outer cable and the sheared inner cable (cos of incorrect routing) makes with the snapped innerand you get a flick of life from the needle?

worked for me due to the torturous route chosen by the professional that fitted the new inner cable.

I also have to say that the gearbox connection and angle drive was completly incorrect but not sheared through.

It must have taken quite a bit of work to find a tortuous route for a Stag speedo cable :?

              Mate it certainly did

Idid suspect that the cable was not a Stag or even a triumph unit. Needs must here in the underworld:shock:.

the outer was looped over the top of the tunnel and it had burnt through? and there was a spike on each end of the inner that kept making on random gear changes!!!!

Who knows car was maintained by pros only and i have a receipt for the work OMG:dude:

              Cheers
