I have just had a good chat with Carl

we may have come up with a couple of ideas that will tick all of the boxes in terms of members, non-members, where to wash our linen (clean and dirty ) and will have a couple of styles of moderation to suit those that pay and those that dont, whilst allowing all to join in and contribute.

As a bit of an up-date:

Brian and Roger have done lots of work to make it clear who is a member and who is not, which is excellent as we have at least 20+ % of the club confirmed now and a few hundred more who are currently on the fence.

Carl is also looking at alternate software as a way of getting more features for those that want them, whilst providing better support for when things dont go to plan.. If you are a member of another forum and think that their software/layout is good, why not let the admin team know and they can have a look and ask a few questions about what is possible.

For the next few days, Carl is busy with something else and we are going to have a chat next week and take it from there, but I have a feeling that what we have discussed will work, please everyoneand be quick and simple to put in place. Watch this space.

I hope that you dont mind but I have closed Don'sthread as whilst I am all for free speech (and things that bounce ) nothing is going to get sorted or changed until Carl has a bit of spare time, so if you are thinking of leaving, hopefully you can wait a few days before doing so? If your not able to, but would be willing to come back if we can achieve Eutopia, please drop me a PM and I will let you how we get on.

    Graham

I understand that Carl is in the internet business and probably has a good feeling for where he is going, but Google has just thrown this up if it is any use.

Another good post Graham, looking forward to hearing how you get on.

Regarding forum software this one is whatmost of the big boys use:

http://www.vbulletin.com/and is probably the most widely used on 'tinternet

What criteria are youusing to pick a replacement if that's what you're looking for?

I like the idea of being able to create a blog. It would be good feature for people doing restoration projects.

I'm a big fan of the vBulletin format too. Has a lot of options and abilities to fine tune members' privileges and access rights etc.

                    A full blown example:

A very compact and tidy structure:

Another Forum I use pretty regularly for all sorts of things is the "Tenerife Forum", and this uses the vBulletin format and has quite a lot going for it.
                      Have attached a link below

                      http://www.tenerifeforum.com/

If you access the Tenerife Forum site scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see the most users on-line at any one time was 4,743 (Four Thousand Seven Hundred and Forty Three) on the 21st of September this month, so you can see that it is widely used over here.

I am fairly happy with the layout / features of the forum as it is now to be honest. Is having more catagories the issue why it might be upgraded - are we talking about changes to the actual software or just further enhancements within it?

The problem with vBulletin is that it is so widely used - who wants all websites looking the same?

There are quite a few others and, personally, I like this one........ the black style is simply a skin by the way....

I must admit that I've always liked the look and feel of the Club Triumph Forum which also has a members only area if you're signed in with your membership number. I'm not an internet wiz so can only state the obvious that it is friendly and structured in a very logical way as far as the user (me) is concerned.

OK, it caters for more than one model of Triumph so it has a large model area, but it also has good technical areas and details of the excellent events they run, and all this from a club a third the size of the SOC.

For those that like the local area information, there is space for each area to keep their members updated on line.(Their excellent magazine is once every two months)

I understand it is produced through E-Blah (whatever that is!)

                          see http://club.triumph.org.uk/cgi-bin/forum10/Blah.pl/

They also provide links through to members own blogs which adds a very interesting dimension in its own right.

Non club members are allowed to post, however the forum is carefully moderated to ensure there is no abuse.

Two more that I use - no particular recommendations but they seem to have all the facilities that I need:
