    Steering Wheel Wobble ?

New to Stags, and just joined SOC - Enjoying Stag, but have a technical question hope someone can help with.

Got steering wheel wobble between 40-50MPH. Happens whilst accelerating and slowing, and not brake related.

    Have had wheels balanced.

Have removed front wheels and checked the wheel bearings and they seemed tight enough.

Tyre pressures checked and the same.

But still I get wobble....any suggestions really appreciated.

    Thanks

    Martyn:?

    Hi Martyn,

Welcome to the forum! I had a similar thing once and it turned out that the rim of the wheel was damaged thus making the wheel buckled. The buckle was barely visible and I only found it when I jacked the car up and spinned the wheel. I have often had problems balancing the Stag alloys, an old tyre fitter told me once that the centre hole often isn't central therefore the balancing machine is not accurate. I don't know if this is true:?

      Hiya Martin,
As a cheap way to check, why not put the fronts on the back, and the back wheels on the front - if the wobble disappears, it's to do with the wheels.
      Worth a go?
If not it might be to do with the big nut behind the wheel !!
      lol

usual culprits are the lower ball joints, wheels and/or tyres out of balance - my money would be on the lower ball joints

          Hi Martyn,

          Welcome to the Forum.

How old are your tyres? When I bought my Stag the tyres were between 20 and 25 years old. I had them all balanced and it made no difference. After discovering how old the tyres were I replaced all of them and no more wobble. (Tyres shouldn't be used after 7-10 years old I think (Can't remember what the recommendation is off hand).

          Regards

          Dave

Hi Martyn I had the same trouble with all four wheels they were first balanced on the centres and still had wobble. I then found a tyre fitter who had the equipment to balance the wheels with them located on the stud holes Guess what the were out of balance. they were then rebalanced on the stud holes and were perfect which confirms that the centres in a stag wheel are not alwaysdead centre

              Regards Tony

Try jacking the car so the tyres just clear the ground and spin the wheel.

Have some sort of a pointer close to the edge of the rim and see if the edge of the rim is moving up and down. In my experience only half of the wheels will be perfect, and you may be able to recentre the wheel on the studs if the wobble is only slight.

Sometimes the hubs ( front of rear) can also have a slight discrepancy in the stud positions and this can be used to offset wobbly wheels. I once had to scrap two out of a set of five wheels as they had been drilled so far off centre, but oddly the problem only showed up after fitting a new set of tyres
