    Auto fluid leak

    Me again...

So the previous owner of my Stag suggested the autobox may have been overfilled. I haven't driven it for a few days - just been in the garage and there's a narrow river of red running on the floor almost following the centre line of the car :-(

I've seen a few topics on this but haven't worked out if the box can be drained or not and fi so how easy is it? Is the alternative to just let it leak until it reaches its correct level as I've also read about oo much fluid causing high pressures in the box.

Now to clean the garage floor and relocate the dish before SWMBO find out....

So what does the dipstick say? If it's a BW35 there is no drain as such, you'd have to undo the banjo bolt and let fluid drain out, I don't know about the BW65. It could be you have a leak, not unusual, check the level first, with box warm and after moving lever through the range.

Sometimes the BW35 suffers from incontinence, they occasionally push oil up the dip stick tube when left standing. Mines done it twice, it's not a lot but looks more than it is when all over the floor. it's been suggested that it's when the T/C drains back into the box because of NRV failure causing it, It might be worth checking the connection at the box , condition and routing of the breather pipe though. It should run as high as possible along the bulkhead panel and over the top of the servo.

        Thanks for your replies.

With the engine cold (stood for 4 days) - there is fluid on the dipstick right up to about 2 inches into tte springy part of the dipstick. After a 5 mile drive and leaving it for 5 mintues and burning my hand - there is a thick dollop on the very bottom with a thinner coating up to the higher of the two notches.

You are checking it with the engine running aren't you?

That level sounds about right Ian. As Milothedog says, these boxes suffer incontinence, fixing is VERY expensive and not really worth it. I wouldn't try and drain some off unless you're doing a change, if you think your floor looks bad now - - - Martin.

Are you sure that it is from the autobox, or could it be from the power steering?

With the engine running and up to temperature the blob at the very bottom of the dipstick just gets past the low mark.

Going to have a good look underneath at the weekend.

Check carefully where the leak is coming from, I thought mine was leaking from the oil cooler pipe until I put some clear white paper under the car, this confirmed that the leak was from the torque converter area which required a gearbox out job to change the gearbox seal - long job to get it out, 5 mins to change the seal!
