    EJ Wards Aluminium Radiator

    G'day All,

I'm thinking of buying one of the EJ Ward aluminium radiators as part of my airconditioning mod. I was wondering if any of you had purchased one and could comment on the difference it has made to the cooling system of your car.

    regards,

    Raoul

I have one of these on the Trevor. Definitely runs cooler than the stock one. I also decatted, which dropped the temp another 5 degrees. Now the days are cooler, the car is noticeably slower to get to 90 degrees and reluctant to stay there

Hi Raoul, I've got one and I'm pleased as punch, it warms up much more quickly (don't know why but it does)when cruising fast in warm weather she rarely gets above 90c, switch off heat sink is dramatically reduced as it sheds heat fast. I spoke to a number of Sunbeam Tiger owners a while ago, they have the same problem that we do, a V8 in a confined space, and they had all cured it by fitting Ali rads. Go for it. Martin.

Hey mate how about buying two and trying to do a deal? Even with the Dollar being strong it's still going to be around700 bucks by the time it's here! A mate of mine just bought a standard radiatorfrom Natrad and paid $800 so I guess it is still a bargain!

Regarding jobs "upnorth" I now commute "south" to Townsville for work!2 weeks on 2 weeks off! When are you coming up for a beer or twothen?

            Cheers,

              Gents,

Do any of you know the temp that the EJ Ward switch cuts in and out on their aluminium radiator?

Afterfitting and leak checking the installation, following fitting, draining and back flushing the whole system and a coolant change, the electricfan came onwhen the temp gauge needle was vertical. I took the car for a "spirited" run up the coast road this afternoonand the temp needle was varying between vertical and 3/4 hot (approx 4mm below the red). The airtemp was 32C and humidduring the drive. The electricfan was not running during the drive. When I got home the fan cut in when the needle was at 3/4. Is the gauge that inaccurate? With my my old rad, the needle stayed just below the half way mark and didn't vary at all. I was using a Kenlowe variable sensor inserted in the top rad hose.Does any one have any ideas whats going on? I have never seen my temp needle fluctuate so much.

I have a 14 inch fan installed in front of the rad, no engine driven fan, a 20 psi cap, 78C thermostat and a louvred bonnet

              Thanks in advance,

              Raoul

If you haven't changed the temp gauge sender and it was stable before with the old rad it would seem that the fluctuations are real which would be a concern but I guess with only an electric fan it will do that more than with a machanical fan, should only do it when stationary though.

Do you have an A/C rad now which is blocking the main rad?

                Cheers Steve

                  Hi Steve,

No I dont have any aircon parts installed as yet, the only difference is thechange ofradiator and the change of temp sensor from kenlowe variable to EJ Wards suppliedfor the fan.

                  regards,

                  Raoul

Hi Raoul, I didn't like the fixed temp switch so swapped it for an adjustable one, each Stag seems different so I wanted the extra control. Get rid of that bloody useless temp gauge and fit a capilliary one, preferably the dual,temp/oil pressure gauge, about £65 GB from MGBHIVE with adaptors, doubtless available in Aus, If you want to keep your electric gauge, swap the sender for one from LD Parts, they're reckoned to be more accurate than the original. My temp goes up and down a bit but not a prob. Apparently, the difference between half way and the red zone is about 5 degrees. With a 21 lb cap, your engine will boil at about 130 C. It really is a useless gauge mate. Martin.

                      Raoul,
Dave Lawrence from Canada had this rad installed said it works great he also had them add to it so you can fit a sending unit he said the quality is first class. These guys make the rad in the US. Another stag owner also has one that he fitted and said it cut his cooling by 30 odd %. cost is 499 US
I have no financial or other interest in this company. this is for information only.

                        Hi Martin,

Where didyou get the adjustable switch from? I think the supplied switch cuts in too late for the high ambient temps that we get in the tropics.I found that one of the fans was intermittant and I was not getting the usual airflow. I have two 10" Davies Craig fans monted side by side.

With the fan fixed I went for another run, the ambient was 34C, and at a steady 100 kph (approx 60 mph) the needle was vertical. It is only in slower moving traffic or stationary that I need the fans to cut in. So I think the adjustable switch is the way to go. Set so the fans cut in with the needle just past vertical. I'll try the sender from LD parts also. I dont need the combined water/oil gauge as I already have an oil pressure gauge where the clock used to be. I don't think even a Stag V8 needs two oil pressure gauges!!

I just spoke to EJ Wards they told me their supplied switch cuts in at 102C and out at 97C, I think that confirms that it is too high for my conditions, does anyone have any alternate ideas?

                        regards,

                        Raoul

                          Hi Raoul,

If you cannot find a suitable thermostatic switch easily, I suggest using the heated rear window switch (I suspect that you may not need the HRW very often!) and connect the output of the switch to the output of whatever thermo switch you eventually use.

Switching the HRW switch to ON will then turn your fan(s) on; if the thermo switch turns your fans ON, the little light below the HRW switch will illuminate telling you that the fan(s0 arer doing their job.

                          Hope this helps

                          Peter

Hi Raoul, I got my switch from Wards. If they've stopped doing them, which I doubt, your best bet is "Revotec", most suppliers use them but charge more. You need the 22mm one.
A cheaper, but less desirable option is a fixed temp one, switching on at 88c and off at 79c, that's from "Car Builder Solutions". Good luck Martin.
P.S. It might be worth you looking at kit car parts suppliers in Aus.

Martin are you sure its that low ,if an 88 stat was fitted that would mean the fan was on all the time once the stat had opened. My fixed one is on at 97 andrarely comes on.
