    side-impact bars - retro fitted.

    Hello Chaps

As we all know the Stag was fitted with side-impact bars for the American market, but it seems that us Brits were not considered so valuable and the domestic cars didnt get them.

About ten years ago when I was restoring lots of Stags I offered used to make up side impact bars from 1"X 3mm square tube, and fit them while replacing the doorskins. And because I had done the hard work of figuring out the ins nad outs, I also offered them for sale to anyone.

And as I am reskinning a pair of doors at the moment, I offered to make some up for the owner and am currently in the middle of the job of fabricating the plates which locate the bars to the carcass.

Is this of interest to anyone else?

I will post some pics of the process shortly.

They will come in pairs or singular if required, Obviously they can only be fitted during reskinning but I have made plates to locate them and help spread the load.

And as for Monarch. I was a mobile car restorer and I did a couple of big STAG jobs for David Carter , which sort of turned into a Stag workshop at his home, Jonathan Finnis was one of our customers.
When David wanted to let go of the business and Finnis was looking to increase his, Monarch was born.
And the side impact-bars were entirely my idea and design. I sold them for £100 per pair and I didnt charge for fitting - if reskinning a door.

I havent worked out a final price , I think it will be roughly about the same once I have rationalised the procuction process.

DAMN! Just reskinned the doors. Didn't know about these things.

Any way to fit them into a reskinned door shell? Make them two piece with an overlap? (Even if the overlap would have to be welded it would open up a possibility maybe?

                        Hello chaps

I reckon that I can supply them for £100 per pair, but will have to check out carriage costs. This will include fitting kit and full instructions.

I have been trying to figure out a way of fitting the things without removing the skins and it can be done, but I dont thing they would be quite as strong. I'll keep tinkering and see if I can come up with satisfactory answer.

Some of the current VW Audi range have extruded square section aluminium bars which are held in with a single bolt on each end, and they mount to the inner face of the door carcass. Would Stag owers feel safe with this arrangement?

My understanding was that all US Stags had the bars fitted and it was all to do the Ralf Nader and the crash protection stuff which led to the Jag S-type and Tr7 having hard tops.

I have worked on a couple of US spec cars and the side impact bars are impressive double tube things. The side impact bars which the Tr7 got are like motorway barrier.
