    Alternator on way out?

Just been out in the Stag to give it a run and bed in the new steering rack when my Tacho suddenly started jumping about, at the same time the volts gauge went right over to the Red and stayed there. All other gauges are OK (except the under reading speedo, but I'm used to that!)

Is this a sign that the alternator (18ACR) is beginning to go on the blink? The car has a new fanbelt properly tensioned, and the voltage regulator was recently replaced by a solid state type.

When I parked up at home and left the engine idling at about 750rpm whilst opening the garage door, the Red ignition light came on and the voltage dropped to 12-13.

    Hi

Sounds to me that the regulator is sticking. Have a multimeter in the car and when it does it again, take a reading across the battery terminals.

Gauges dont play up when it comes to reading volts

    It may go away

    Good luck
