Just dis-assembled my O/S front strut as there was too much play between the insert and the bottom of the casing and the MOT man wouldn't be happy at the amount of noise it was making.
Before re-assembling I just checked the insert - pushing the piston down by hand, with the bottom of the insert on the floor is really easy - pretty much no resistance and can push it down full travel in 1-2 seconds. Piston gradually comes back out by itself and it seems harder to pull it back out manually as it is returning.
Is that the normal bump/rebound characteristics or is it shot? I can't imagine it offering any resistance under bump conditions with the weight of the car on it.
If it's shot, where's the best place for two (
) new inserts - quality as an insert and also the right length to fit in the suspension tube without manually shimming with a penny washer?
