    Engine Missfire

    Can anyone help me?

My engine has a rather annoying habit of stalling particularly when the engine is hot, runs fine, plenty of power, until in say traffic when all of a sudden the engine goes into a kind of miss fire and stalls if not caught early enough with the throttle. If caught early enough the engine miss fires and there is a distinct lack of power with a smell of fuel.

The carbs have recently been rebuilt, there are new leads and a distributor cap, new lumenition, new plugs, the car really runs well until this happens.

Has anyone had this problem before, or can help me point a finger at a potential problem.

    Thanks

Is it flooding and fouling the Plugs! if the needle valves are not sealing you should see fuel coming out the overflow pipes and leaking to the road at the front of the engine, hence the smell of fuel!

No, its not flooding to that extent, there is a strong smell of fuel, but the engine does spark up and continues as if nothing had ever happened.

Just to discount it completely, leave the car with the ignition on (not running) after a few seconds you should hear the fuel pump stop clicking. If it continues pull off the overflow pipe on each carb.

Have to agree with Ian, I would bet genuine beer vouchers that it's your needle valves. They were designed by Ikea and made of plasticine, I'm on my fifth pair in seven years. Easy and cheap, just tedious. Martin.

I admitted defeat with mine and took it to Faversham Classics they sorted it and on the way home it ran better than ever. 1 mile from home it started misfiring limped it home and rang Favershan they suggested one of the pistons in the carbsmight havestuck. Had a look and they were correct a quick wiggle with the oil plunger freed them up they thought crud built up while the car was running badly just needing cleaning. misbehaved for a couple of days been fine ever since.
