What's it made of....usually

I have some discolouring of the trim 712411 across the top of my front panel - this has only happened recently, and must be where my car cover has been shifting in the wind.

Trouble is I can't seem to shift the discolouration using Solvol Autosol, and the rag is turning black where I have been rubbing - if anything it may be getting worse.

Is this trim normally stainless, or is it chromed? I would have thought stainless would have come up OK using Solvol........

These trims are chromed, so what you have is probably similar to one of mine, the chrome is very thin and worn through. You are polishing the under plating. Where my chrome is thin it has a brass effect, which I assume is the nickel. Keep polishing and you will go right through to the base. I think the only solution would be replacement, or rechroming of the one you have. Try using ordinary car polish as this is less abrasive. With luck you will have saved the nickel layer and it won't look so bad.

Thanks for that Dave - I suspected as much! Good job they aren't a fortune, but mine will do until I get both my rear bumper blades re-chromed then it'll be down to what's cheapest -buy or chrome.

Turn the trim upside down,it might be better underneath.

Re-chrome them, cheaper than buying if yours are undented and un pitted. I am just having mine done @ £20 for the straight pieces and £8 for the horseshoes
