    Just in time

My Stag is currently at Faversham's having a fair number of bits done one of which is new timing chains. Having spoken with them today, removal of the timing cover has revealed tensioners all the way out and slack chains so I think Ive got there just in time and saved myself a full engine rebuild. From the records I have they have done about 28k miles.

Yes, feeling quite pleased as I was sure I could hear what I thought was a very faint rattle at tickover. Helps to justify the expense to the better half.

Steve, sounds like you are suffering froma 'chain' reaction. Diana Ross had that problem

Shes still fit for her age.

Without starting the whole chain debate again,I replaced mine last year and they had done about 40k and the chains and tensioners still were ok,its not something I would reccomend leaving it that long but im sure changing the oil about every 2k prolonged their life.

I agree Mark and that's what I do.

I think if owners just go by listening then there may be a chance that the engine is fitted with the pre-stretched chains and I am not sure that you get any or much of a warningif they go. I may be wrong.

Snap! Mine is at Favershams today as well! Took it there this morning for it's 1000 mile head torque and oil change on it's new engine. Going back tommorow to pick it up so will keep an eye out for yours. I see you've gone for the popular colour like me!

                      Hi Steve,

I think the car will be on a ramp because its also having rear suspension, brakes and the offside manifold refitted. Trevor told me the whole exhaust is off as well. I have had the car about two and a half years, didn't set out to get russet brown but when I saw the cream leather it just looked so good. I think its going to be like driving a completely different car when I get it back. Cant wait!

Nice one Steve - i can confirm, from bitter experience, that replacing them before they reach the end of their life is considerably cheaper than fixing the colatoral damage of a snapped chain

                          Hi Steve

Yep it is up on the ramps! Dan was busy cleaning off the old gasket from the timing cover when I was there this morning and your exhaust system is indeed on the floor!

Your wheels look good, and as for the interior, what more can I say - wow, really goes well with the Russet, mine was changed to a cream vinyl by a PO, but the door cards were never done so they remain in the original beige, used to think it looked quite good until I saw yours today:?

Mine is now going like a dream now, at 3500 on the M2 it was so smooooth and passing everything in sight (78mph according to Mr Garmin, 60mph according to Mr Smiths!!!) My Dad following behind me in his Merc reckoned I was doing the high 80's - says a lot for the accuracy of the modern speedo!

                          Trevor builds a mean engine

Has anyone actually seen one ofthe German chains snapped? It was suggested some time ago that maybe this only happens when something else is wrong such as seized water pump, distributor or oil pump.

                            Cheers Steve
