    What have I done

Just spent a couple of hours flatting down the bonnet of my car, on Saturday the car was in one piece and nice and shiney, now look at it.

Sill covers removed and a scary moment as there looked to be rust under the paint, fortunately it was muck/runs in the paint from when the car was painted 10 years ago, phew. All joints raked out de rusted and seam sealed just the drivers door to repair as it has a small hole in the bottom corner, screens got to come out as well as the hard top rear screen and trim. Then with a bit more prep she will beready for paint

Are you sure you have rubbed it down and not peeled it?

Good luck Dave. It must have been awful rubbing that first bit of shiny paint with abrasive paper.

No Brian, the guy whos painting it restores VW campersand hes going to do the spraying but heis happy for me to go to his workshop in the evening and work on the car which will save me some money. Ive done most of the stripping down and Ive flatted some of the paint down. Hes doing any welding thats needed but this is minimal (one spot on the drivers door) and hes de-rusted all the seams and re-sealed them.

Car wasent too bad beforeI stripped itbut its amazing whats lurking under shiney paint, rear valance behind the bumper was starting to rust which I hadent spotted and most of the seams had cracked and the sill ones were bleeding rust, plus a small spot of rust on the front panel to wing join was starting to show, just hope I can get it all back together once its painted without scratching it.

Yep it was Andrew, Ive just returned from two weeks holiday and the body shop had left a message on my answerphone whilst I was away saying they could fit the car in as agreed earlier in the year which was a surprise to be honest, next available slot was next April so it was now or never. I went intomy garage on Saturday morning and there stood my shiney Stag all in one piece and looking pretty good but by 5pm it was in the body shop stripped and the flatting down had started.

Doors, bonnet and boot lid now off the car, hard to believe last Saturday this was a nice looking shiney Stag with a couple of areas that needed attention. Turns out the muck in the paint on the sills was actually moisture and muck trapped in the paint from thebare metal job I had done 10 years ago. This area hasbeen taken back to bare metal again and treated with rust killer, luckily its only slightlycorroded the surface of the metal so no big issuebut could have been nasty if left as it was hidden by the sill covers which was handy for the painter. Had the same issue around the back lights soI suspect the car was reassembled before the paint had dried properly, wasent prepped right or the moisture trap on the air line wasent working.
