You do say if your car is a Mark 1 or 2? The wire colours are different so I have listed both. There are three connections to the starter on an Auto.

Large cable : Main feed from battery

White/Red : Ignition to Starter via Inhibitor switch

    White/Orange : Ignition Coilto Starter (White/Orange on a Mark 1)

I suggest you check as follows:-

    a) security of the White/Orange wire on the back of the ignition switch.

    b) security of the White/Red wire at the ignition coil

    c) Clean the starter motor earth connection.

    d) with the gearbox in "Park" check for voltage on the White/Red at the gearbox multi plug with someone turning the ignition key to stage3.

    e) if (d) shows voltage then try it on the other red/wire in the multi plug and repeat the check.

    f) If it passes (d) and (e)can you hear the solenoid trying to click in?

    g) check for continiuityalong the White/Orange between the coil and the starter by using a multi meter.

    Good luck

You told us what's wrong, no feed to the inhibitor.

Did you mean no feed to the switch or is it no feed from the switch? If you have power at one of the white/red wires and not the other, try moving the selector lever around and see if you can find a position where you have power at both. It should then start and your problem is the switch. If you have no power at either white/red wire you'll need to determine which is which and trace it back to find the fault. I don't have a wiring diagram handy but, as Bruce said, the coil connection is a likely suspect.

hi,guys, just a word to say thanks to both bruce and adie for the info on tracking down the trouble on my mk2 which would not start, i started with the coil which was ok then tested the multi plug, one wire was broken, ifixed the wire , thentook a gulp!!. and turned the key, what a lovely sound it started first time, in five weeks.. i can not wait to go out in it again, and thinking back i can remember having trouble starting in the weeks before it gave up the ghost. so again thanks guys, paul
