    Which Antifreeze

Just upgraded my alternator to a high output type and relocated with a new bracket. To get the old alternator out from the top I had to remove some of the water pipework and now need to refill the system. Good opportunity to change the antifreeze before the winter sets in.

The question now is which type to use. I seem to remember that most people did not use the red stuff, so that leaves the blue and the green.

The stuff that came out was green in colour so was planning on replacing with the same. Can anyone tell me what type the green is?

    TIA

You're correct Steve...it's probably not a good idea to mix pink with blue or green. If my memory serves me right both green and blue are ethynol based so should be ok together. I would recommend thatyou empty the system (including engine block) anyway and refill with new. If you're really wanting to replace with green I thing Comma made it.

    Regards

    David

I think colour does not always tell you which type it is, you should not mix the modern OAT type with the older ethylene glycol type. So you need to look on the container - personally I stick to the older type but there are a number of people on here who use OAT - just do not mix them.

I don't think there is a standard colour convention, its up to the manufacturer what colour they decide to use.

Saying that generally the bright red/orange/yellow are the OTA and the blue/green the traditional ethylene glycol types (but in the past I've had a yellow traditional type, Unipart long life I think!)

I think with the Stag you are better sticking with the traditional types and flushing every couple of years instead of the long life OTA tyres that don't need to be changed normally for 5 years.

Also once you swop to OTA, I've read that swopping back to traditional types can cause problems if not cleaned through properly. A little of traditional and OTA is okay...a little of OTA and traditional can cause sticky blobs apparently!
