    door mirrors - Tex

I am planning to drill the holes to fix my door mirrors before I send the car in for its respray, but I wondered does anyone have a template to ensure that the holes are drilled in the ideal position - to get the best out of the mirrors - i.e. the mirros located in the best place.......

I anticipate some difficultly in deciding where to put them, then making up, because I'm a "car widower" as it were.............. any ideas/suggestions/instructions gratefully recieved!

Sorry its a bit off subject but ldparts do a clever rubber gasket that goes between the arm and the mirror giving the heads much more adjustment, if like me you need it after fitting them. John

as John says above - these give you more adjustment and I find you need them if you put them in the "standard factory" position

Yes I know, they do seem to get decent reviews

as another aside are there 2 different "arms" for the mirrows - one which is "straight" and one which is swan neck... someone told me this, but I have to say that I've not been able to either fine the variations, and differentiate between them

"Standard factory position" is just the issue, not having a car with door mirrors (at all) I've got no reference point, so I don't know where to position them..............and I want to aviod trial and (big) error.................

Where are you going to fit them ? the doors or wings ? Mine are on the doors and the front chrome edge of the window frame cuts through the line of sight so you have to move when driving to see in the mirror but to put it further back to see in it with no intrusions it looked like it was half way along the door skin.

i assume you have put a new door on or door skin. why not take measurements of a door that already has the holes drilled. maybe the one you took off.

doors, but your issue is the one I want to try and avoid. What are the position measurements of yours - how far between front of door to front edge of mounting plynth; and how far down from the window rubber to mounting plynth?

                        Dear Alistair260661

17 years back when I had new door skins fitted, I had the same concern about drilling two holes and then discovering that they were in the wrong spot!

I decided to go around at Stag Meets, measuring the door mirror positions of as many Stags as I could.

I noted all these various dimensions and then did the obvious exercise of sitting in my normal driving position with my dear wife holding the new door mirror in situ as required.

Eventually, I drilled the holes and fitted the new door mirrors and,..........in the fullness of time, and after extensive "sea trials" had to admit that my mirrors were fitted in the wrong position! (too far back)

As "european voyager" mentions, the vertical stainless steel window framestrut cuts across your line of vision!

Of course many of us are of quite varied heights and sizes and all sitting maybe in slightly different attitudes.

I am of normal build and 5ft 9in tall

My incorrect position is > The front edge of the Tex mirror baseplate is 11 inches back from the edge of door skin

The centre of the mirror baseplate is directly below the vertical line of the offending window frame strut.

One day!!!!!!!!!!!,...........I shall remove the mirror and baseplate and move the assembly forward to pick up just one of the two holes and then drill a new forward hole, fitting a lovely blank grommet to the redundant hole!

What I DO know to be a better idea, is to fit Tex wing mirrors!!!!

I do hope that this helps!!

how much further forward do u think your mirror's need to be to avoid the offending strut?. I am fitting Tex ones, are your mirrors not tex?

                            Hi Alistair,

Just been out to measure mine and the front of the baseplate is 9" back from the door edge and centred 3" down from the top

This was the optimum place for me (5' 10") and the window frame does not get in the way, and the quaterlight opens, just missing the mirror.

                            Works fine for me.

                            Rgds..Al

                              alistair

one thing to bear in mind when thefitting door mirror make sure the mirror is not in the way of the quarter light window or you wont be able to open it (easy mistake to make)
