    OIL pressure

    hi guys,

just collected the stag from Wards today, they have fitted an oil/water gauge for me and a new fuel pump, my fuel pump packed up on the way there :shock:, well thats cured the intermittent stalling and grinding to a halt. Bearing in mind that it's a fully recon engine and its done about 1000 miles now, i have an oil pressure reading of about40 warm, on tickover, and 70 cold from start up, is this too high, i asked Mick and he said the way the engines are reconditioned they will read slightly higher because the oil ways on the crank etc are counter sunk, thus helping the flow, but it does increase the pressure :?

i would like your thoughts please as i know the last thread you spoke about 25 warm and 50 from cold, i'm a bit confused :?and would really like some opinions please

Hi Alan, your pressures are fine, idling at 750 rpm hot, my oil pressure is about 40 psi. It goes up to just below 60 psi when cold.
If it were 70 all the time you would have a problem. Mick knows his stuff. Martin.

      Thanks Mart.

i read the eailer threads and did wonder a bit, mick did explain it all and i do trust him, i thought it would be because of the rebuild, just wanted to lay my self doubt to rest. thanks for your response appreciated. i just need to turn the light green now lol.

      thanks :dude:

It's called Stag paranoia mate - it's expected Martin.

mines at about 62 all the time when warm? would that indicate a problem

I'm no expert, but it might ? There have been issues with pressure relief valve springs, do a search and you'll find the threads on here. Otherwise, I'm sure some of the wise old owls on here will help. Martin.

Electric gauge or good old fashioned capillary tube? I don't like the sound of that if it is for real but it at least shows consistency for relief valve operation!

I'd check your gauge is accurate before taking further action, and if it is a true reading maybe get a relief valve spring from an OE pump as the County ones run the pressure a bit higher and it's not good for your timing chains in the long run.

cheers for that, what should it read when engine warm and normal driving?

55 psi is what the relief valve should crack off at, and should really be regarded as the max you should see on your gauge at any temperature, assuming it is accurate, except when the engine is really cold when the relief valve may be a bit tight in its bore and the oil is very viscous, when it may exceed this figure briefly.

i have a capillery type. thanks for the comments lads and yes it proberbly is staganoia, how can i check the guage etc and the pressure, i do have more than 55psi, do you think it will settle down, the capillery pipe has no oil in it either, should it have?

                    thanks for the help

You don't have to prime the gauge, don't worry if you can't see oil in the pipe. The only way to check the gauge is by substitution. Kryten has the measure of it, try starting and leaving it to idle, if the pressure drops as the temp goes up you're OK Martin. PS STOP WORRYING !
