Wheel setback is different one side to the other

Just noticed something today after owning the car for a year and a half. The o/s rear wheel is set back inside the arch about 10-15 mm more than the n/s ..Mounting points for the diff and cross member look unmolested and the rear arches have been repaired on original wings so i can't work out whats wrong .

I'm going to be replacing the whole back end sub frame which I'm hoping will sort it (it has a certain amount of adjustment)but i would like to know what's going on.

    Any ideas Guys?

    Cheers Steve

      Hi Steve

Sounds more like a slight flair on the arch rather than the diff and subframe mountings.

      Interesting one though

It's more than just an arch because with a straight edge along the cill linethe o/s is flush with the tyre and the near side tyre sticks past about 25mm .

          Here's the offside.

just a thought you have got pairs of wheels there has been talk lately of non original wheels , the valve holes are in different places, possibly a thicker forge?

Thanks for looking so quick Nick .I was thinking the o/s looks too far set in .Panels can't be that far out thoughor the door skin wouldn't line up with the rear panel.the car doesn't look bent so i'm hoping it's something to do with worn parts underneath.

I could always chuck it on ebay and buy yours

I have no knowledge about this, but I have a vauge recollection of reading somewhere that a particular trait of Triumph suspension is that there is a certain amount of sideways movement in the rear subframe that can leave the wheels offset when stationary and that the direction of the offset depends on which direction the last corner you turned was!! .

Does this sound familiar to anyone, or is it a figment of my imagination.?:?.

Just checked mine (and yes it is cold out there!) NSR same as yours OSR my tyre is in board by about 1/2 inch at the front of the wheel and level with the straight edge at the rear of the tyre!:?

Is this just poor Body and White at Triumph or a Sub frame tracking set up by the factory?

My car drives perfectly and has a hugh history file from the 4 previous owners the last one had it for 24 years and no indication of accident repairs!

Thanks also for looking Stuart.Apart from lots of waggle due to worn trailing arm bushes mine too drives fine and doesn't scrub the tyres.I'll get it out of the garage asap and do some measuring with regard to the 4 mounting points in relation to the outside skin.

Went out and looked at my arches.Pretty pointless exercise considering the mods so i looked underneath and bingo there it was a complete BMW CONVERSION hopefully the answer to your little problem Steve. The sooner you fit yours the better.
