Hiya Frank, welcome. Don't use synthetic oil ! they're too thin. On Kryten's recommendation I switched to Valvoline VR1 20/50 a while back, and it's definitely superior. After 3.000 miles it comes out as viscous as it went in.
To repeat what's been said before, anything thinner, e.g. 10/40, will drain away from the cam followers and leave you with a dry engine start.
VR1 ain't the cheapest, but it is the best, there are other gooduns out there, Millers semi-synthetic Sport, American '76 etc if economy is an issue, but definitely buy the best you can afford. Cheers, Martin.
I really should have bought shares in Valvoline......

      Morning Mike,

Book says 8 pints (4.5 litres) without filter change but 9 pints (5.1 litres) with filter change.

Never seems to work out quite that way but that should give you a goodish idea - unfortunately it means that, if you're changing the filter (which I would always advocate) a 5 litre can is probably not quite enough :?

      Cheers

I think this question came up a little while ago, and the opinion then, IIRC, was that the 0.1 ltr stays in the sump/engine, so a 5 ltr can should be enough.

But always handy to have some left over for top ups though.

Yeah, I'd go along with that.

But Al, as you bought two 5litre cans of VR1, are you expecting to do lots of top ups? :shock:LOL

            Haha! :P
I'm dropping the sump soon to put a new gasket in, so will likely need that extra 0.1ltr !
It's cheaper to buy it that way as well:dude:

Thanks for that guys but I'm thinking that if you were to take it up to level with a small amount of say Comma 20/50 do you think it would make a big difference mixing VR1 and a weedrop Comma.20/50

That way you would get away with a 5 litre drum, hope this makes sense

Now I know you Scots have a reputation for being a little ...erm ... cautious with their money, but you haven't got to piss in it to top it up Mike LOL

Only joking, I reckon 5 litres will probably be ok.

                Cheers

                  `Hi frank

I think fully synthetic is way to thin for an old design engine like the TV8.

20/50 mineral oil is the way to go.

Halfrauds classic oil goes into mine, even has a picture of a stag on it.:dude:
same for my stag i only use it cause of the picture

I've taken to buying 5 litres for the change and 1 litre for topping up. Martin.

                          Hi,

Has anyone used Castrol Classic XL 20w-50 oil, I was thinking on buying 20L. Is it any good.

                          Cheers for the feed back.
