    poly bushes

Over the winter I expect that at sometime I'll have the front and/or rear suspension apart and be putting new bushes in. Looking at the various suppliers' websites there seems to be a poly bush for just about every place on the car, even the big rear subframe ones. Now, I'm wondering if it is a good idea to replace all of the bushes everywhere with poly ones, or if some are better with new rubber ones?

For example, I vaguely recall somewhere reading that the front drag strut bushes where it attaches to the body were better in rubber as the poly was too stiff for that application and didn't reduce the shock loading, leading to faster wear on the fixings.

    Any advice welcome!

    Hi John,

This is what Peter at LDparts has said about 2 components. If he says it then that's good enough for me ! Why not give him a call to ask him? (No financial connecton etc, etc just a very satisfied customer)

    Cheers

    Julian

We believe that it is essential to fit rubber mounts at any point where the Body shell is in contact with the suspension. This is for maximum damping and the avoidance of vibration problems.
There are stiffer polyurethane versions available. We have yet to be convinced about these items in such an important point on the car and are only planning on offering the rubber item.

Drag Strut Bush in Rubber. 138143

We prefer rubber to polyurethane in this situation for two reasons. 1 We believe that bodyshell to suspension situations are better in rubber and polyurethane, very good in some locations, can be too harsh. 2 We know of a drag strut being broken over an unlevel hard surface with blame falling on polyurethane bushes

      Thanks Julian,

Perhaps it was on the LD website that I'd seen it. It seems to make sense what is being said there (as usual).I thinkI'll just use poly bushes on the pivotting connections like the rear trailing arms and track control arm and new rubber elsewhere.

I replaced all my bushes with poly, except the large subframe one, I left these as rubber. The diff bushes are voided, they have 4 slots around them. I've put poly on the drag strut to no ill effect!

The problem nowadays is that many of the so-called rubber bushes are much harder than the original ones and virtually indistinguishable from poly when new. They then seem to degrade very quickly with some owners claiming that they are knackered within a year or so.

I did see a company at Stoneleigh last year selling rubber diff mount bushes for the Stag that they claimed were to OE standard, but as I had just bought a set of the voided poly bushes I didn't bother. No problem so far with the voided ones, nor the poly ones on the drag struts, either in my current Stag (which already had them fitted when I bought it 2.1/2 years ago) or my previous Stag which had poly bushes all around for many years before I sold it.

I suppose that if the 'quality' option for the 'discerning owner' is seen to be poly bushes then the rubber bushes left on the market will tend to be the cheapest option where the focus is on price rather than performance.

I have superflex poly bushes everywhere, the large subframe bushes arenot superflex, I got themfrom RB.

I have voided bushes on the diff.

I have had no problems in the 3 years since they were fitted and no-one who has been in the car has complained of harshness etc.
