Time for the real work to begin....

    hey everyone,

the stag made it to the garage this morning, it was running very badly, misfire, mixture all wrong, although im very happy with it for the fact that it started and was running better the hotter it got!!! so

anyway, i know its going to need a fairly large amount of welding, suspension bushes will need doing .

i have asked my garage to get a ticket on it so that i can then start on the body work..

I do not want to do any of the work cause i know i simply will not be able to.

there are around 4 people in my area that have a good reputation and i have had one very good quote for a full respary. my only question is the parts?

i know the rear wheel arches need doing, should i just replace the whole lot? or get them to cut bits here and there?

i was wondering if Dave Taylor on here might know anyone to do the body work? as im not sure how good the locals are with bodywork..

    Thanks

    Ben

Ben not trying to tell you how to suck eggs, but be very careful with your run of the mill paint sprayers mate. I was lucky 2 x years ago and the local guy who did it for me was not to bad. But when I needed the floor pans replaced and some others bit's done the original guy did not want to undertake the welding side of it.

Unfortunately the garage that I did commissionthe floor panelwork with, turned out to be the biggest cowboys ever. At the time I almost cracked up with the carry on I had with them. There was a well documented post from me at the time, as it was the only way I could vent my frustrations.I kind of feel a bit daft now to be honest but never mind it cooled me off at that time.

So basically I wouldn't want anyone else on here going through the crap that I did and having their car returned to them in the condition mine was. Be careful mate and don't be sucked in with sh**e promises. BEST OF LUCK

        Hi Ben,

If the carb damper isn't stuck, then it is probably the carb diaphragms that are shot. A couple of quid each and easy to fit. Apparently the rubber doesn't last well with unleaded fuel, so they need replacement every now and then.

        Rgds

          Ben,

I've had some work done by 'Devon Classic Cars', at Ermington, and was very pleased with everything they did. (Apart from the price..!:shock

I suppose you get what you pay for..!!

            Hi Ben,

Tuning and carbs I can help with, but bodywork is not my forte. Unfortunately the guy who did bodywork for my first Stag is no longer in business and I have struggled to find anyone since who will do a decent job at a reasonable price.

Jer has mentioned one place not too far from you, but I have heard mixed reviews about quality. Everyone agrees about the prices they charge though :shock:

Dave Cole (who sometimes posts here davidhelencole) had his bodywork done locally and he is close to you. Might be worth sending him a PM.

Went in the the garage today, apparently he has got I running better again and is due to go on the ramps Thursday/Friday.

Devon classics gave the car a once over for me in the summer and I agree they are dam expensive.

Dave, my mechanic is going to get it running and mot'ed but he said he cant really do the fine tuning, he's recommend me where to take it, the guy has VERY good reviews with a full tune up for £50.

Although I might take you up on your offer with some tuning, As much tea and biscuits as you can eat will be provided.

I spoke to a local guy today who said for a respray it would be around £1500 or then if I want the engine out and it all done properly it would be 4k or so, the guy is a very good local guy with lots of people saying good things about him so I think I'm sorted there.

              are those prices about right?

              thanks
              Ben
