    Identifying Original Hood

    Hi,

I was just wondering, is there any things to look for to ascertain if a hood is original or not?

Most of the digging around I have done on my car has led me to believe that my Stag is generally pretty original (Apart from the assorted minor tweaks I have done to it ). Any clues I can look out for?

    Cheers

    Dave

I'm ready to be corrected but on all the original hoods I've seen (only black was ever standard) the stitching looks almost purple. I rather suspect this is as a result of ageing rather than being purple from new :?

    Cheers

The rear screenbeing embossed in the top left corner with the cleaning instructions is probably the easiest way to identify an original top.

          Dave.

Mine has a dated tag at the rear by the centre catch.

Rear windows without the genuine 'Vyback' brandembossed in them will probably not be be original.

Yes roof interior on Mk2 is beige, but then most quality replacement mohair covers are also beige.

Roof webbing on original covers were beige, and were backed by foam for some strange reason, so this could be another pointer to original.

Mine had the foam on the webbing when I change the hood; never did figure out it's purpose so I left it off

Originals have a strengthening aly metal strip vertically along the B post to stop the edges flapping at speed. Mine doesn't have these

If it's the bit I think you mean, it's spring steel, like a corset. Most hoods have the pocket for it sewn in. Martin.

Hi, the webbing sits under the seams on either side, it stops them chafing. The soft foam is an assist, mine's gone as well, I suspect most have. Martin.
