    Exhaust Manifold Gaskets

Where the exhaust manifold meets the head, I dont think any gasket was fitted as original, although available from some suppliers.

When fitting the tubular manifolds, are gasket recommended here?

I have a car with a failed gasket which has caused a bad blow. I am inclined to refit the manifolds with exhaust cement but no gasket. Any experience of this?

That's what I'm using i.e no gasket and some exhaust paste. No leaks.

I have never used gaskets, however the flatness of the flanges leaves a lot to be desired on most tubular manifolds which is probably why the gaskets blow. I generally file the flanges flat before fitting and then use paste

The manifold seems difficult to remove; itis trapped mainly by the auto boxoil cooler pipes, plusthe dipstick tube, andthere is also an engine oil cooler fitted.

I might have to clean up in-situ using emery cloth fed through the gaps, then paste onto a thin blade. Tricky.

I did my manifold with gaskets and sealer!

You can slide the gaskets in without removing the boltsby cutting the holes out and I added the sealer to the gasket then. I did this twice as my first go then revealed a leak at the exhaust joint and a nice chewed up thread

Then thanks to Kevin I fitted another manifold and sorted that joint out.Never leaked since, I wanted a belt and braces as the offside one is a b*gger to take off. Although I ended up doing all the oil seals whilst I was fiddling in the area!

          Cheers

When i refitted my tubulars earlier in the year i decided to fit TR7 gaskets between the manifold and head - i didn't have any leaks before, but it just felt like the right thing to do. (no leaks with them either )
