    Wing Mirrors

I'm still learning about the Stag history. Anyone know whatvintage were fitted with the wing mirrors on the wings, rather than the doors.

Anyone prefer this arrangement to the door mounted mirrors?

hiya gord, cant say iv'e ever seen any mirrors fitted to the wings bet it would look cool though with a good pair of swept stem mirrors fitted,as for the door mirrors the rear view is not perfect and difficult to set up anything like although you can get a set of ferrels (jaguar vintage) for a few quid that fit and improve the rotation range of the mirror on the stem.I bought a set after seeing a thread on here but have managed to finally get a good enough setting for now without using them.

Hiya Gord, what Stags came out of the factory with outside mirrors, only had a drivers door mirror. You can fit pretty much what takes your fancy. Having said that, wing mirrors really pre-dated the Stag, and almost all owners went for door mirrors. Martin.

I have a copy of the Stagsales brochure showing an M reg (1973) car on front, complete with drivers door mirror. Obviously it was a rehash of the previous years as all the inside photos are of an L reg car, with not a mirror in sight.

The Rover/Triumph showroom fitted options catalogue for the same year shows a M reg Rover 2000 with a forward mounted wing mirror, with a pretty girl using it to apply lipstick. None of the mirrors on offer woould have fitted a Stag door.

A Wing/door mirror for the driver only became compulsory in 1978.

          Hi Gord

My stag has the swept back stem wing mirrors plus door mirrors, gives excellent rearward vision, its a 76 mk2, I presume these were fitted by a previous owner as I don't think that they were an option.

Mine is a '72 and I believe it was delivered frm the showroom when new with wing mirrors rather than door mirrors.

Having said that, these aren't the original mirrors as the previous owner failed to send them on to me (even though he told me he had them available), so these came off ebay.

I thought they came out of the factory with no door/wing mirrors and they were fitted by the dealerships prior to delivery with whatever the buyer wanted, hence the vast array of different mirror types and positions we owners have today.

                  hello Gord

I must admit i would like mine on the wing as Inot only think they look better but i can only see out of mine on the door if i lay down ( not a comfortable driving position) I dont know where they were fitted originally but most seem to be door mounted.

                    As a young apprentice )bmc)
I can remember new cars going through the pdc checks, and then any extras fitted

radios , wing mirrors , aerials, even seat belts,as well as under-sealing,which was all done by brush (very messy)
quite daunting as an apprentice drilling holes in brand new cars

Thanks for the posts. I was just curious as I saw one for sale near me on Pistonheads and it had the wing wirrors, rather than door mirrors. Also, the back page of the club mag for October 2009 shows a wing mirror version in the middle of a clutch (excuse the pun) of cars.

What would the right name for a collectionof Stags together - a herd of deer is the usual animal reference, but apparentlyfor roe deer, it would be a bevy (or bevvie?!) of deer.

Is there agoodname for a collection of Stags? Anyone got any imagination?

I think this could be called a 'Bevy of Stags':

                            Hi,

My 1974 Stag had a door mirror as well as swept back wing mirrors. I bought it in 1976 so did not know any better untill SOC was formed. When the door mirror became damaged by someone passing when parked, I removed the fitting and fitted black grommets into the holes - can always put it back.

Having never driven a car with wing mirrors, how good are they compared to door mirrors?
