Sender Unit In Only One Cylinder Head

Just reading wikipedia about the TV8....

"As a legacy of the V8's beginnings as a straight-4 design the sender unit for the temperature gauge is located in one cylinder head (rather than a point of the cooling system common to both heads as on other multi-bank engines). This means that problems can go undetected in one head until enough damage and/or overheating has occurred to affect the one fitted with the sender unit".

I assume there's no fix to this? Just adds to the normal overheating paranoia!

You can buy (quite cheaply on eBay) coolant adaptors that can be installed in rubber hoses and allow the fitment of temperature senders. That way, you could fit yours downstream of the point where both cylinders feed into the coolant flow.

    Just a thought.

Hi Dave, if you are paranoid like most Stag owners you can get an attachment from Rimmers that bolts on the other cylinder. You would of course need 2 guages but the second one can be a dual oil pressure/water temp. Either problem solved or another thing to worry about.

Thanks Peter. Coincidently I've been thinking ofbuying a dual oil-temp gauge, but not for this reason. And i'm not twitch normally paranoid! Maybe a bit at the moment not cos of overheating but cos I've got the dreaded Stag starter clicking problem. Now I worry about going out and having to return on the back of a tow-truck!I've just bought the starter relay kit from Wards which I plan to fit this weekend.

Dave, once the EJ Wards kit is fitted you will never click again, two years on mine and its the best kit other than a electronic starter on the car, mine being an Auto gave you no 'jump start option'

Hi Dave, I put the bulb for the mechanical guageI installed in mine into the r/h side of the thermostat housing for that reason. Opinions on this forum point to the rear of r/h cylinder head being the hottest place and I have considered changing it. I will wait until its running again (heads off, gasket, valves guides, spark plug inserts and new nickel plated studs and bolts)and put a electronic digital temperature reader over it before a decision.

            Cheers Ian A

Hi Ian. Yes being able to bump start is one of the few advantages of a manual (IMO!!!). Especially going downhill with only your mrs pushing

I have a capillary gauge fitted to the right hand bank and a sender unit on the left they both are reading right at normal its not a hard installation and it is a good comparison check.

Having checked the heads with an infra red thermometer I can confirm that the right hand head does run hotter, but if you have a link pipe between the left and right water transfer housings at the back of the heads, the back of the right head will be the same temp as the left, which suggests that water does flow through the link pipe from left to right.

If you have a link pipe and a transmitter in both heads you are not going to see any difference between heads

I am thinking that a link pipe may be a sensible modification, then.

I reckon it's a good move to ballance the temp of the heads. Here's mine before I fitted the clips.

These are home made modifications so you won't find the bits from the suppliers.

Here's aprevious thread on the same subject:

Just thought I'd throw in a picture of mine. I bought a second temp sender and the 'hozetail' connector and then drilled and tapped both the blanks in the water jacket end cap to fit. Not quite sure if this mod achieves anything but it seemed a good idea at the time.:?
