The pistons in my carbs are different?

Just took my carbs elbows off to try and solve my cam cover leak

When the elbows are off you can see the piston inside the carb? on the passenger side that ishard to move like a brake piston yet the one on the drivers side has no resistance at all?

Is that right? If not is there an adjustment I can make or is does it require new parts etc?

I'll get pic on in a min

also not sure if relevant but theres oil I haven;t noticed beforeon the top of the V just rear of the carbs?

hi Simon, they should both be the same mate, they should move freely, one of the other guyswill explain better and in greater detail if one is stiff then you do have a problem sorry

      cheers Alan

I;m glad I;ve identified a problem cos you;d expect when fixed the car will run much better

I can only describe it like shock absorbers, one is working like good shock one works like a knackered one.

Sounds to me like the oil has leaked out of the dashpot on the one with no resistance. Unscrew the black plastic bit on top and fill up with 20/50W engine oil. Check the other one is up to the same level. Check the oil level afetr a few days if it has gone down then there is an o ring that will need replacing. Not done one myself but I'm sure one of the other members can explain how to do it.

I thought it must need resistance

your right Roger it was empty, put some oil in for now and its made the piston like the other

just drove it and it seems fine but I think its fair to say I need someone in the know to have a good look and refurb.set up my carbs

How much does that normally cost?

Not sure what a refurb would cost. But if its all running OK now why touch it? there are threads on here where people have had their carbs refurbed and then had even more problems with the refurbed ones. If it ain't broke don't fix it!Just keep an eye on the oil level in the dashpot. If it continues to seep away then I know it is a simple job to replace the relevant O ring.

If the oil has leaked out, which it looks like what has happenedit would go down into the manifold and not the "V" wouldn't it ?so maybe the oil in the "V" is another leak.

                Cheers Steve

                  cheers for that

Its only because I think it must be able to run a bit quicker than it does, maybe I;m just getting used to it and having had quicker cars in the past I;m beginning to find the stag a bit slow

No need for a stag to be slow, a good one will easily surprise some modern cars. Isyour ingition timingcorrect, both static and advance?Thats an easy check with a strobe gun.

Also if auto box, isyour boxup-changing too soon, that can kill performance?

                      Hello,

if one of the carbs has no more damper oil, it might be worthwile to check and perhaps change the O-ring at the needle holder. But be careful when pushing out that holder with its star washer. Presumably the star washer will scratch the inside of the tube. So you might have to hone that inside before pressing in the needle holder with a new O-ring. Otherwise te scratches will damage the new O-ring.

                      Kind regards, Dieter.

                        Hi Simon

Think I saw you the other day on Singleton Ave but I was several cars behind you.

Sounds like the O rings in your carb dashpots have had it. They lose their shape over time and become flat. Not a major job to replace but best done inside....on the kitchen table etc

Have a look at this link....it's really useful and helped me when I did mine. http://www.bowtie6.com/CarbRepair/

You will need to get yourself down to James Paddocks Chester(or go on their website) and either buy yourself 2 new O rings or buy 2 new needle valves with the O rings already fitted. You'll also need a carb adjusting tool ... I've got one of these so you're welcome to borrow mine. While you're at it I would examine and if needed replace the carbdiaphrams...again dead easy as long as the new ones go back in exactly the same orientation.

One more thing...check for air leaks. Get your engine up to temp and running without choke at about 750rpm. Listen to the engine note andthen remove your oil filler cap. The engine note should change, indicatingthe leak you've just created. If it doesn't, then there was a leak there anyway and removing the cap didn't make any difference.

                        Regards

                        Dave

were you in the stag on singleton? that would have been me I;m up and down there 4 times a day to go to court from the office in Prenton

I shall order some o rings and have a good look at what needs doing. temperemental buggers these cars!!

                          Simon

                          ps Dave

I took the oil filler cap off and it changed the engine note immediately as it was taken off and put back on again
