    Photo Tachometer.

Hi all, some kind soul started a short thread about the above, but sadly I can't find it.
I've bought one off Ebay and blow me down, it works ! At long last I've been able to establish that my viscous coupling is faulty, not too chuffed about having to buy another, but now I know. A big thank you to said kind soul. Martin.

    Martin

Just had a look for these as I didn't know what they were, found some on ebay but how do they work on the fan unless it knows how many blades it has?

    Cheers Steve

The device comes with some reflective tape, cut off half an inch and stick it to one blade,it has a laser target light, point at the tape and it counts the revs, I checked it against a multimeter tach and it's quite accurate. Martin.

Ah I see ,Would be good for quick comparisons between stags to see if a VC is failing, might have to have a word with Santa.

What were your readings for your VC as mine seems to slip freelywhen hot but only spins 2 blades when cold which seems the wrong way around to me.

Got a new VC ready on the shelf thanks to Bob H

        Cheers Steve

Hiya, I'm afraid I didn't make accurate notes, but hot, at 2000 RPM the fan was reading about 850. Martin.

            Hi Steve,

The VC is supposed to follow engine revs until somewhere below around 3000rpm, where it will go no faster no matter what the engine does. I think 2850rpm comes to mind. The fluid inside shears at this speed.

Thanks Dave /Martin,mine must be on it's way out I think as when hot it spins freely,Still don't overheat though.
