Vinyl on dash starting to crack

The vinyl on my dash is getting brittle and starting to crack. At the moment the cracks are not in visible places or are very small.

I seem to remember a friend of mines Dad who ran a car dealers back in the 80's mention vinyl replastcisers but I have googled and can't find any such product.

I am thinking of using vinyl paint (which penetrates the surface) to try and stabilise it before it becomes unsightly. Dash recovering is extremely exspensive and I would have thought not totally original looking.

Does anyone have any tips on this?

Someone mentioned that Diving suit glue was good for small splits in the dash, being black aswell helped.

as a temp repair you could use black silicone sealant available from most diy stores, I've not been able to find a brush on vinyl paint for years now and I think your only long term solution is to replace it with a good used item.

            Thanks for the replies all.

There are spray on vinyl paints available and some of these are available with a "primer" which basically is a chemical that helps the paint penetrate the surface. This sounds like a plasticiser to me. In the absence of anybody having tried this before I'll just have to give it a go.

I'll look at repairing the existing cracks using black glue or silicon as suggested and then try the above.

Have you had a chat with The Plastic Surgeon? http://www.plastic-surgeon.co.uk/abo...eCoverage.aspx

I don't know if there is one local to you. They do paint repairs, but also dashboard and upholstery repairs. I have seen some of the work our local branch has done and it is quite good.

I would guess given that resources are limited then the look of the dash is less critical than either hard top repair panels or indeed the more important A pillar repair panels. However, maybe if we didn't spend so much on a magazine..........

                    Hi Ian

There is no connection between the club magazine and the Tooling Fund budgets or project allowances and I am sure Roger K will confirm this. If there are proposed and agreed projects for Tooling, believe me, they would be on it like a rat up a drain pipe, wouldn't you Roger?

Has anyone had their crash pad recovered as Ihave seen trimmer adverts forit and have no idea what the finished product is like and at around £150, its not bad value. Just a real pain, getting it all out.

:shock:B*oody hell, that's too much dosh fora split. I was so sure there was an advert in the mag in the recent editions that were doing them for £150 and the centre consoles for roughly £50.

Will now cover mine up so they don't get marked

                          Thanks

                              Thanks for that Dave.

I am a bit worried about losing the original look with a retrim though, I'll give a repair a go because if that fails I won't have lost much, it can still be recovered.

                              Kind regards
