    Monarch Manifolds, the story begins.....

I have had a hell of a time today, I decided to fit the Monarch Manifolds before heading off to Longlife for the new system and a good job I did.

the damn thing won't fit at present, each Rover conversion is different and therefore there are too many variables !

    my problems are:

    1) engine mount in the way,

    2) power steering hoses in the way

    3) gearbox oil cooler hoses in the way

    4) alternator cables in the way

I had to cut the exhaust pipe to see if the new manifold would fit so I am kind of commited to finishing it now......

I will have to re-route all the hoses the best I can, lenths permitting and cut down the engine mount just to fit the manifolds, very tight fit indeed but check out what I am replacing...

This is the gapI have to drop the downpipe into, it will only fit with part of the engine mount cut away and all the hoses moved and obviously heat protected.

I won't know if it all works until late tomorrow and this is only the offside !

The nearside does look a lot easier though, I have been cursing like a trooper today but at least this is when I get to really know the old girl, warts and all.

New manifold outlet pipe size looks alot bigger so you shouldgain lots more power. worth the strugle no doubt.

      Good luck Steve

Just finished for the day, I have got the first manifold on, just.

lots and lots of cursing today, the air above my garage was blue !

I have done some iffy re-routing for now and will have to look at that again, the wiring loom has been moved too.

The manifold is touching the body and eventuallyI would like to raise the engine by half an inch to ease that, but this will cause bonnet issues but that is for another time..

I will start the nearside on Thursday, this actually looks simple as nothing is in the way, famous last words.......

Stuart, i dont wish to scare you but your wiring loom looks dangerously close to the manifold. I think the stainless manifolds give off more heat than mild steel. What about some heat rap on the wiring?

Thanks Jason, I was going to wrap all the wiring and hoses once its all done and in its final resting place, thats reminds me I must buy some !

            cheers

You might want to put some heat wrap around the manifolds, its not cheap but it will protect the wiring and other pipes and ancilleries etc. and you are supposed to get a small performance increase too, although for road use this isn't too important.

You will need to fit the wrap with the manifolds off the car!

Here's a close of mine (Triumph engine though)

had a change of plans today so did the nearside, it was a real pig to get it into place and it was just too big but a few hours and shoving, grinding and smacking saw it go between the engine and bodywork finally ! I am really glad to have done this now as I felt like crying at one point today......

At least the manifold doesn't foul on this side, so only have issues with one side and that can be solved by raising the engine if it can't be pulled clear.

Iwill move the brake pipes eventually but will heat wrap them for now.

All thats left is Heat wrapping, re-doing the gearbox oil cooler with Rubber hoses and refilling the steering and gearbox with oil.

Here's a pic of the old and the new, the old really had some major restrictions to airflow.....

I spent yesturday heat wrapping the manifolds whilst still on the car, not an easy thing to do but I am not taking them off again !

I used those SS clips but they seem pretty useless, I can't get them tight and my hands now look like I have been pulling pampus grass through my them.....

I will replace them with jubilee clips.

Also I managed to raise the engine a few mms so that the manifold is not in contact with the bodywork inside the engine bay, that I am pleased with and the bonnet still closes.

                    Roll on wednesday.......

So have you woken the neighbours up by starting it with only the manifolds.I wouldn't be able to resist the temptation.

Alas not, I got that out of my system in the eighties when I did just that with a Spitifre on just manifolds, I went for a drive down Surbiton High street...

I have got the old system kind of mated up to the manifolds ready for the 10 mile trip to longlife.

one thingI did notice was the revs on tickover have gone up to 1100 rather than 750, shows how much less restricted she is now even with the old system still in use.

I wonder if a 30% increace in tickover means you'll have a 30% increace in power

Stuart, you need a pair of needle nose pliers to get the clamps tight, pull them hand tight, then cut off all but about 1/2 inch, then grab the tip and roll the remaining length into a tight coil using the needle nose pliers. This will allow you to tighten the clamps in place - easier with more room of course.
