different trade but the same subject ,a bricklaying friend of mine in hastings cut a brick in half while holding it , the half that came off hit a nail on the floor the nail shot up into his eye and blinded himin one eye , but we still dont wear glasses when we are bricklaying on site , but when i,m working on the car or when i,m turning wood ,i wear a full facemask ,

Having spent the last 21 years of my life working on offshore production platforms, I cringe every time I get near to a building site. Brickies, electricians, plasterers wearing trainers with not a steel toecap in sight. People using disc cutters without eye or ear protection. Scaffolding that looks well dodgy compared with our standards. The list goes on. No wonder the UK building industry has one of the highest injury rates around.

I must admit to getting near to a 750kg heavy horse now and then without toetectors and, if you've ever seen the surface area of a horseshoe, you can appreciate that it would probably trim off your toes like tinsnips if he stood on your foot!

One of the little known risks is those strimmer thingies for trimming the lawn. Driving past a communal strimmer bloke one day a stone chip got catapulted out of the strimmer and hit the door of my Audi ..... it took off paint and primer and dented the metal visibly :shock:

        The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

hi dave ,that might be on private sites ,but on main developer sites , like wimpey or any of the big firms ,you wouldnt get past the gate now without high vis vest toe tector boots hard hat ,you only need goggles if you are using a grinder or disc cutter , and after forty years being a bricklayer sub-contractor ,safety is abig thing on site ,not many people like it ,but to work you have to comply , addmittedly private sites can be a nightmare to look at when you drive by , especially roofers that climb up ladders then onto a hook over ladders scares the crap out of me ,one slip is all it takes ,even window cleaners now have the long pole system ,

          sorry for the ramble

Glad to hear that the industry is catching up. We get visits from the HSE regularly. They can turn up at the heliport and insist on travelling, meaning we have to bump someone to make room if necessary. When here they have a 'captive audience' as no-on can hide from them You used to hear tales of the HSE turning up at a building site and all the contractors disappearing out the back door..

hi dave ,i have been on sites with about ten bricklayers and the HSE turn up and the site is given a prohibition notice because the main contractor has cut corners on scaffolding mainley ,where because it would cost more for proper loading gates they have put a scaffold pole over the loading bay , i found if your men had all the ppe ie

hi vis, boots and hard hat good ,but if it was going to cost them money they will try to get away with it .

i'l get off me soap box now
