    Steering Rack leaking

    Hi Guys,
I've got a serious leak from my steering rack.
I've checked previous posts to the forum, but haven't found and answer to my problem - hence my post now.
What's the opinions of the experts - should I refurbish my rack, or should I replace it with another (reconditioned?) one?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Best wishes,
    Frank

    Hi Frank

Stag racks vary enormously in how well they work. If you are otherwise happy with your rack I would not risk an off the shelf recon from most suppliers; I dont expect most recon ones have replacement gears (rack and pinion), and you might justget a worn one.

I had a chat with a guy who does them, he was at the Tr club gathering in Leatherhead. I aksed what he does if the rack or pinion is worn; he just avoided the question. :?

      Frank,

Where is it leaking from? Have you tried the proprietry power steering fluids with leak sealer in them? I know from personal experience that these do work if the cause of the leak is worn seals. The additive swells the seals and stops the leak. However if they are too far gone then refurbishment is the only cure. It is a DIY proposition if you are handy with tools, and can provide a scrupulously clean work space.

      Good instructions here: http://www.triumphstag.net/start/index.htm

Click on Suspension & Steering in the left hand margin. Seal kits are available from the usual outlets.

Used this and it kept the leak at bay for 5 years.

Had to fit a new rack this year.Bought from LD parts

        No problems
