    Two self-tappers?
    The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

I think the plate has to come from a older car not a younger one so I do not think so but others will know for sure.

        Ben

I don't think you're allowed to put a registration on a car that suggests it is younger than it really is.

You used to be able to because I imported my Dad's 1974Saab in 1983from N Ireland and switched to GB plate. I think I got a brand new Y plate

As the others have said NO. You cannot change the reg no to one that makes the car appear younger than it is. the dvla will not allow it.

The good news is if you do put a new number on the car if you sell it and transfer the new "cherrished number" off to another car then the original number is usually given back.

            Hi Ben,

From your note I take it that the number is V**JTG. This would be a 1999/2000 number and can only be displayed on a car of that year or newer. You need one from 1974 or earlier, so JTG**V is also not allowed (1979).

That's what I thought but it definitely wasn't the case with my car nor - even though he may not know it - Thom's (who posted on here yesterday)

When I looked through all my paperwork I found my car had had a personalised plate some years ago but when they removed it a new plate (with correct year and same region) was issued.

On the front cover of the mag a few months ago there was a white Stag with a number very closeto mine and when I contacted the owner he told me the same thing had happened to his car. He then sold the car to Thom.

And, as others have said, they won't transfer a newer number plate on to an older car - although I did manage to many, many years ago when my 1963 Mini became 'OOK 900 G' In those days,it was described as 'Retention of a cherished plate' - It helped that I new the girl at the registration office quite well

              Cheers

                Hi Julian,

You are correct that they used to allow all sorts of registration transfers. Many years ago they seem to issue any "old" plate from the local office. Then they moved toissue "age related plates" when the number was transferred off again. Now they have rationalised the rules and where possible - i.e. if the number has not been reissued - they will reapply it to the car. A couple of years ago I bought an Southern Irish registered 106. it had been exported by the p.o. a few years before. WhenI went to the local DVLA office they simply reissued its old UK number and sent me the V5 - this was great as the original plates were still in the boot of the car so the whole process cost me nothing.

                  Nice one withthe 106 Roger

I didn't realise all that stuff you've mentioned - very interesting.

Right now, I'm in the process of trying to get a personalised plate for my daily car that's almost exactly the same as my Stag's plate - I reckon the two of them will look good together.

My two cars complement each other perfectly with vrtually the only similarity being that they've got 4 wheels and an engine. I got an 8' x 4' sheet of 18mm plywood in the back of my Citroen C8 the other day and it's got 7 seats - but it doesn't sound particularly good and it certainly doesn't turn heads

So, if I can get almost matching plates for my Gorgeous Stag and Great C8 it'll be good

                  Cheers
