    Adieu ........ almost!

My SOC membership expires on 31st January and I have just received my last magazine, the December issue.

Although I have not seen much published on the matter by the SOC Committee, the President's statement in the November magazine was that, "…the minority of the forum grumble that they don't get anything from the club… and … for less than 10p a day they will be able to continue to contribute to the forum….."

I'm still trying to work out the content of that statement (do the minority who don't grumble that there is no point in joining not have to pay 10p a day?).

I have not received a notification of the imminent suspension of my "write" rights on the forum, I gather from the different snippets of information that this will soon be the case.

I have no doubt that the person(s) "in charge" sincerely believe that they are doing the best thing for the SOC and I admire their selfless and voluntary efforts and contributions to the SOC. However, the decision to make forum contributors pay was, I think, unwise and poorly conceived. The fact that numerous protests and alternative suggestions on this forum have apparently been ignored or, at least, glossed over, creates an impression that the SOC is not run by its members, but run by a select group who play things very close to their chest.

With the exception of the forum, I have no particular advantage from any of the published SOC benefits, but would happily pay the full dues for the entire package if it became apparent that members' views were being seriously considered and that maintenance of the SOC Leadership status quo was secondary. This could be by putting more effort into remanufacturing, for example. I don't see anything of this happening in the near future, so will let my SOC membership lapse.

With only one or two notable exceptions, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time posting on the forum, (although I only made it to second place in the most popular threads!) and had the opportunity of meeting a few of you in person.

I am not writing off the SOC at all and will keep my ear to the ground to see if things develop differently in future. Perhaps if such a new development is published in an SOC Members' Area, one of you might be kind enough to drop me an eMail. Maybe if foreign Stag clubs are allowed write access to the forum, I shall appear here again. I have bookmarked the European Stag Event for 2011 and am sure I will be there, although in which guise, in which car and as a member or guest of which club I am not sure!

In the meantime, I'm afraid I won't be able to let you benefit from my knowledge and experience gained during the Stag restoration but will, of course, continue to use the forum for the wealth of information which it offers.

I am posting this now not to whip up any bad feeling, but so that anyone who wants pics or whatever of "that little corner" whilst my Stag is still fully disassembled have the opportunity to pm me and get a picture posted on the forum.

I am currently undertaking a major rework of my homepage (it's a mess at the moment!) - http://www.rsmk2.com - to be able to continue my photo documentation of the Stag and a few other things and, if anyone cares to eMail me - stag@rsmk2.com - with comments or requests for photos etc., then I will be most happy to receive them.

As I have said before I really enjoy following your restoration work and have found it to be of great use, particularly when I have some of the bodywork to do on mine around the corner. I would very much like to keep in touch and will save the link provided, and drop you a line with my email address.

I personally think the forum is worth the fee alone, but I don't agree with the stance taken by the clubon the forum and feel is is backward looking, and I appreciate why some forum members have reacted to this. I also feel that it has taken the shine of what I considered to be one of the best and most useful forums I have been a member of.I won't go on further as I think it's all been said.

    All the best Glyn

as far as I was aware, overseas members that can prove they are members of a Stag club local to them can have write access to the forum. I think there are a few 'International' members on here.

Sorry to hear that you won't be renewing - I share your view that the forum should be open to all. A few club members have found the forum fist and joined afterwards, but I get the impression that more members have left/are intending to leave because the forum is locked down.

        Drew,

Normally, I would say that you can continue to post once membership has lapsed as there is no process to change status, at least as of a few weeks ago. I will be interested to see how your change handled by the admins. Personally, I expect you will be read-only by 10.00 AM1/1/2011 at the latest

It will be a shame to see you go as you have been able to very accuratelysummarise and analyse recent decisions and there impact and have a very balanced view ofclassic car ownership and club membership:
        • You are an overseas member,
        • you are as good with the keyboard as you with the spanner and welding torch,
        • you have other classics
        • you have a sense of humour

and importantly you dont mind challenging the status quo. Some see this as winging and moaning, but I see it as accurate, usefuland fair observations.

Why not join in over on Club Triumph? Post asummary of the restoration and take it from there. I am sure you will get a good response.

If you want, I will get my son to copy and paste all ofyourposts, excluding pictures into a word document for you to give you more time to weld and paint stuff. He is coming to work with me one day next week and it will keep him occupied for an hour or two. Please let me know if that is of interest.

Also, not sure if I can swing it, but the RBAS are having their Christmas party and first AGM in a week or two. It could be time to take-on on the first honorary overseas member if you are interested?

          Drew,

will be sorry to see you go, but i understand your reason's and agree with them almost in there entirety, a number of people myself included are on the forum only whilst their membership 'runs down' then will be read only as no longer SOC members

you will find a number of us on 'club triumph' forum which has taken the forward thinking stance of making the forum free and open to all triumph enthusiasts, maybe we could see the up dates of your car on there.

sorry to see you go Drew - I have enjoyed following your restoration.

I hope some members of the commitee read this as this does not seem to be the way to go, at the moment it is loosing members not generating new ones.

                      Very well put.

Shame to see an active member of the forum leaving - maybe see you again on the CT forum.

                          Hi Drew

I think you should reconsider, its obviously not cash driven , and I hate to use the cliche of changing from within, but to jack it in and walk away is hardly in the spirt of Robert The Bruce, or even Ken Bruce.

You can help change this club, I for one would ask you to hang on in there!

                          Rgds Nick
