    Sound Deadening

Under the carpets / inside the boots there are a number of sheetsof thesound proofing material (looks like bitumin sheets), especially around the centre tunnel.

Many of mine havegone very brittle and crazed on top which are fitted on the floor / around centre tunnel and a little bit in the boot. A little bit of heat gune and scraper have soon got these off, but I am just considering my options of what to do:
    1. replace with a like for like area and type of material - this will keep the factory look, but I'm not sure what benefit this really gives
    2. Go for a little more, but keep the black finish look
    3. Go crazy and fit a better more modern material on most of the floor, sills, doors / panels and boot floor. This should give a much better finish in terms of sound proofing and "solid feel", but I'm not sure how much extra weight this would add.

Has anyone done no 3. on their restoration and was it worth it / did it add loads of weight? If going for number 3. I would look to source top quality stuff like Dynamat Xtreme

    Thx, Nigel

      Hi Nigel,

What are you deadening the sound against? Even with the loose fitting (gaps) hardtop on, it's still mainly a convertible, you will still hear road noise. Is it to hide squeaks etc.?

My 'modern' Volvo convertible has a 3 layer soft top but I can still hear road and outside noises compared with driving my estate.

        Hi Nigel

Been looking into this myself, as I currently have the interior in boxes and various rooms!Dynamat now do a "light" version which may avoid the weight gain if thyats a concern.

I have seen a superb job done with flashing tape though which is a fraction of the costs and can be sourced in 450MM widths. I have seen 450mm x 10m for £20.

A mate of mine used this and it frankly looked very similar to dynamat ! Although without the flashy lettering...just a thought. I was going to give this a go on the boot floor and see how it looked first.

These panels do reduce the boom you geton large expanses of metal. Often used in the installation of top end ICE gear too to reduce the issues that subs give. They do work.

        Hope this helps

        cheers Glyn

            hi

i used dynamat type on the floors and tunnel - worth buying a good small roller to press the matting down I have not done the boot yet but will be doing it

not sure about weight gain but dont think it makes that much of difference if yr not on the track

              Nigel

Have a look at this site I found it when considering what to do. It was mentioned on one of the Boom Boom boys (Nova's with big bean can exhausts)sites.

Gives some ideas of the various applications and results,

              Cheers

Thanks for this idea, Glyn. Will definitely try this in the boot which I'm repairing.

For anyone who's thinking of this, the boot or whatever surface has to be perfectly dust free or it'll peel off. You can get a paint on primer to apply first to seal the surface.

                  Cheers Johny
