    Power steering pump knocking

Trying to put my 76 Auto back on the road. Has developed a strange knocking sound that is not engine or road speed sensitive and also occurs at idle in neutral / park, generally after the car has warmed up.

This has been diagnosed by my local garage as the power steering pump.

I appreciate the info. is limited but do people think this sounds like a sensible diagnosis? Any other suggestions?

If it is the power steering pump, anyone got a good second hand one for sale!

Not impossible Sean - they have been known to knock - the 2.0 Montego was a real bas**rd for doing it...

Easily checked.... just take off your PAS belt - you'll soon know....

You could alsohave air in your PAS system - make sure the return hoses are really tight

Surely the PAS pump is engine speed sensitive. So would knock quicker the faster the engine revs.

          Hope you get it sorted.

Staggy has suggested that the cause may be other than the power steering pump. To put your mind at ease before you start to replace it try this simple test. Get yourself a length of wood, like a piece of brush shaft. When the noise is present put one end of the wood to the pump and the other to your ear. If it is the pump you will know all about it. A crude but very effective stethoscope.

Even more conclusive, as suggested earlier, remove the drive belt and start the engine. If the knock has gone, it is the pump; if it hasn't, it isn't.
