Fuel pump overhaul kit - easy to fit?

Been thinking about buying a SU overhaul kit - as I have the mechanical skills of a giraffe is this wise or should I fork out the extra for a new one?

I would buy a new one, I wouldn't think it worth repairing. i bought a new one in July 58 quid plus postage off flea bay. all nice and shiny with new pipe connectors.

I bought the kit, changed the points, the pump made the right noises but for some reason I can't get it to work again,im a very average mechanic so perhaps someone with better knowledge might be able to shed some light.

I would also be inclined to buy a new one. I went for one of the electonic points less versions of the original SU. No points to go wrong!

Mark - It might be that the points gap in the pump might need adjusting. I had that happen to a fuel pump of mine after I had dismantled it to clean up the points.

As most of these pumps are 110 years old I think repairing them is probably an optimistic waste of time, as for the points, I remember them being problematic in the early sixties - go on - bight the bullet. Martin.

            Hello,

May I recommend to buy a Japanese Mitsuba pump. I know they are not original, but as you cannot see them when built in, I do not care.

Mitsubas are of the electronic type - not cheap, but very reliable. After three, new mechanic pumps in my TR6 had failed within one year, I put a Mitsuba in and could forget about that issue ever since.

            Kind regards, Dieter.

              Hi Dave

I did actually set them to the recommendation but still no joy,I must be doing something wrong.

I bought a Quinton Hazell onewhich is on at the moment but the car always seems to smell of fuel under the bonnet since I put this on but can't see any leaks.

                  Hi Klaus

I think the Quinton Hazell one is made by Hardi, not let me down yet either.

Hi Mark, if you have a smell of petrol under the bonnet and no sign of a leak, it's probably over fuelling because of faulty needle valves, with the engine running can you see any drips of petrol below the centre front of the engine ? I very much doubt it's the pump, unless it's a high pressure one. Martin.

                      Hi Martin

I will give that a look, the smell came after I fitted the new pump so just assumed that must be the reason although no leaks anywhere I can see so could be another case of ,wait for it,STAG PARANOIA.

I can recommend the electronic one from LD Parts. It's a direct replacement easy to fit and quiet, Terry

Me also, not had any "fuel" related problems since

I installed a new points type pump some years ago and it barely lasted 25k before it packed up. solid state is the way forward.
