    Replacing clutch slave cylinder

    Hi

I've only had my Stag for a month and I'm not too used to this mechanicing malarkey.:? I used to to work on my Minis about 150 years ago, so know how to do some things and not others. I'm about to fit a new clutch slave cylinder, hopefully tomorrow, and only just realised that the ROM isn't too clear on how the pushrod is attached to the slave cylinder.

To all you knowledgable people out there, this may seem like a really trivial thing, but can someone explain it to me before I get started? I realise I can just lookat the old one as it comes off and do the reverse, but it'd be nice to tackle it with a bit of (someone else's) knowledge.

    Cheers

    Gord

the push rod just sits against the 'cup (the bit inbetween the repair kit items in this picture)

the fork end fixes to the lever (usually to the middle hole) with the clevis pin

    hope that helps ..........Andy

Be aware that the bleed nipple is usually not at the top of the slave cylinder and it is impossible to bleed once it is bolted on.

Attatch the clutch pipe just tight enough to prevent leaks then with the cylinder twisted sothe bleed nipple is at the top bleed the air out, then twist it back so the bolt holes line up before nipping up the pipe. This will prevent hours of cursing, as many here will testify

Make sure you refit the cylinder on the same side of the bellhousing as the one that came off.

Hi all, thanks for the tips, very helpful. Hopefully I can avoid the hours of cursing now! Or at least restrict the cursing to non-Stag issues.

Andy, Neil and Bruce, thanks for your tips, from the simplest tasks like this to in depth descriptions of restorations like Drew's, that's what makes this forum worth the money on its own (hope this doesn't start more debate !!)

Clutch now working fine, good pedal, very smooth. Amazing what you find though, No clevis pin used, just a nut and bolt, and the bolts holding the master cylinder are too short to fit the reservoir bracket behind the nut. Ah, well, something to fix next weekend!

Went for my second drive since purchasing, just sounds great and turned lots of heads at the local garage.

              Thanks again.

                    Hi Bruce

Try and stop me!Otherfailures notwithstanding of course. I guess it probably takes about 6 months beforeyou know the car you have bought. I can seea few niggles that need some attention but at least it's up andrunning again.

How many Stags do we have in the North West. Any idea?

Speaking as a higgoramus with an auto, is there any reason the cylinder can't be fitted so the bleed nipple is at the bottom ? Martin.

Since air is lighter than fluid then the bleed valve workdsbest at the top (even if its not so accessible).

Thanks Chris, obvious really, it's just that I see comments on here about the difficulty of bleeding and just wondered. Martin.
