    oil leaks

time to tackle my oil leak from around the area of the oil pump, can you just disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifold and lower the pipe , or are we talking about taking half the system off, secondly how do you get around the clutch pipe that sits right in the way, does this need to come off or can it be moved slightly, any and all help on this would be greatly appreciated,

    many thanks steve

Hi steve, The answer is yes you can get the exhaust pipe out,But it is a fiddle as it has to go backwards to clear the studs .John

thanks john, its only seals, but getting under and having to dismantle half the car tends to put me off, the leak has been there ever since the new pump was fitted, could be the extra presure from new pump causing the leak, any one had any experiance of this, --- new pump, higher oil presure, leaking oil seals.

      thanks steve

        Hi,

I had a problem with my oil pump, see link, yours wont be as bad if its just the seals.

I did however find an slightly thicker oil pump o ring, I think I bought it from Peter at LD parts. And to date it seems to be holding up well.

          Steve,

Mine is an auto box so no clutch pipe. you do have to remove the front exhaust section. to do this you need to slacken off the balance pipe joint between the teo silencers, then undo the joint to the front pipe and free it all off. you also need to remove the oil filter. finally undo the nuts holding the exhuast to the manifold and give it a good tug down and back towards the rear of the car. Its tight but the front pipe should come off without disturbing the rest of the system. once you know what you are doing it only takes about 10minutes.

regarding the leak. are you sure it is the pump and not the transfer housing next to it? even if its not you might as well replace the seal on that whilst you have it all apart.

          good luck

thanks for the advice, ive now taken off the pump and the transfer housing, there was all sorts of hard sealent ect all around the transfer housing, now cleaned them both up and will start to reasemble tomorrow, the seals look a bit delicate would any one advice a slight smear of sealent around the edges, now ive been under the car, i can see the overdrive is leaking from its sump , to remove and reseal do you need to drain the gear box?

            many thanks steve

Replaced my oil pump last winter put it all back together and fired the beast up, still oil dripping, on very close inspection it was the oil transfer housing that the oil had been coming from. The car had been to two different garages and they all said the oil pump was leaking, and it was a huge job to strip it all down. Bollocks!!!!!!!!!

On the first attempt took about 2 1/2 hours on the second attempt when it was found to be the transfer housing about 1 1/2 hours all in.

Good thing that came out of it was that the oil pump was in a pretty poor state once I opened it up, god know's how I got the correct pressure, it was gouged to bits inside. It looked like it was original so I can only imagine that the damage had come from when the engine had been cooked back in 1981
