    Hi Julian,

Sorry for asking questions on your thread... your topic is something that has been worrying me for a couple of months!

To cold in Scotland for me to be undertaking the jobs I mention but with warmer [hopefully] weather around the corner trying to get some advice before I start.

    Thanks for your understanding.

    kind regards,

    Pablo

Can't start many modern cars without doing this. Something about ensuring that you are totally in control of the vehicle before starting the engine. Or at least that is the bull the Audi dealer told me when I first test drove my current A3.......

Most Motorbikes are the same now, and auto cars have an interlock on the gear selector so you need to have the foot brake pressed to select a gear, not a problem until you try and move it with a flat or disconnected battery.

The only one I have come across with an override function is Lexus.

Starting to think that perhaps I should get a local garage to come to my house and replace the bearings since the sump is off!

If it costs me £100 - £200 it is a job done and something I could perhaps forget about.. what is your thoughts on that..
It would not hurt to get a quote for the job, you may be lucky and nothing needs doing and it won't cost a great deal, but since most of the time involved is getting the sump off in the first place, I reckon an hour should check the bearings and maybe two to replace them, but they will have to remove them to check what size is fitted and then order new ones. With such a low mileage it might still be on the original sizes, but I wouldn't bet even a quid on that

I always thought it was better for the car as you remove the drag from the gearbox with all that cold oil in it on start up.

Shell bearings are normally supplied when you get a recon crank.  If re-using your old crank be very sure to check it properly for size, ovality, and surface condition.   Recons are only about £250 and must be hardened too; I used a J.Paddocks one.
Last set I bought were from Paddocks who supplied Deves rings.

                Hi Neil,

Will get a quote - will be worth it for piece of mind!

I have had the Stag since '86' and bought it at about 28k miles so suspect that everything below is original.

Restored the body work in '88' i.e new wings/valance wheel arches as Scotland was not kind to the Stag climate wise [NE area]... anyway would like to see it back on the road this year since she is 35 in July.

will not take much to tidy up a couple of areas of the body work once all the underneath is done

Thanks to the other guys on the thread for the sound advice that is being offered - and another apology to Julian

                kind regards,

                Pablo

                  Hi Pablo,

Absolutely no need to apologise - feel free toask away

I reckon if you can drop the subframe and the sump then removing mains and big ends would be a doddle for you. As Neil says, the only thing you'll need is a torque wrench and a small screwdriver.

I've sort of done what you've done, but in reverse. I wanted to check/replace my big ends and mains which, as you'll know, necessitated dropping the subframe and sump. Once the subframe was out, I couldn't resist refurbing the suspension, and then I couldn't leave the brakes, could I ?So, although I've checked out a couple of mains and big ends, and ordered the right size replacements, I'm now spending my time on suspension, brakes, subframe and sump before doing the crank bearings.

Why not take off one of the mains and a big end - I think once you've done one it'll give you the confidence to do the others

Btw I know powder coating is so much better than painting, however I can paint, but I can't powder coat so I think sump and other things are going to be painted - do you think I'm mad to do that?

And Neil, thanks for the 'slacken one turn' tip - I hadn't thought of that.

                  Cheers

                  Julian

Ps I was under the car this am at -3 degrees. How cold is it in Scotland ?

                    Hi Julian,

Just been out to wash the wifeys car - it is cold with a built in chill factor very windy, to cold for me!

Have a week off next month will have a look at Stag then.

Also have a couple of things that need painting, would not consider that at this time of year far too cold - the paint would only bloom. Had a new extended garage built two years ago [original integral garage converted to a cinema] was limited to space if only I could have gained another 8 inches width would have had space to work... as it stands my Stag is in a 16' wooden garage at back of house so very limited space available.

Regards powder coating - well worth it! I get my parts shot-blasted and powder coated locally at a very reasonable price.

Just got replacement front suspension legs after wire brushing mine [angle grinder with attachment] painted blue and look very nice only to realise afterwards that the inners needed replacement. Anyhow now deciding to strip originals down and sending for shot blasting [should have done that in the first place] get them powder coated blue [too many black parts on the suspension for my liking] and reassemble using the inners from the replacements I bought etc.

Do not like the sound of the crank bearings being fragile - might put everything back together and hope for the best!

PS also thinking of sending the sump back for another shot-blast to see if they can powder coat the outside only - my painting is fine, lots of etch primer and paint but considering were the sump is - gets chipped very easily.

                    regards,

                    Pablo

                      Hi Mathias,

They came from Ford Escort 1.6D, the Federal Mogul # is F 7127 M.
This is very interesting, did you have to have to have the crank ground specially for these bearings?

My view is that the Stag bearings are a tad undersized, even bearing in mind the very over square nature of the bore and stroke. Yes the engines hang together fine *if everything is perfect* but I can't help feeling this is the kind of mod the stag specialists should have had in the bag ages ago.

Which set is which in the photo, mains on the left and big ends on the right?
