Apart from vary rare occasions, my Stag spends it's life outside exposed to the weather, and I've noticed that after the recent rain, the footwells are a little soggy. This is I'm sure partly because I didn't put the hard top on this winter, but I'm starting to thing part of the problem is rain coming in the air intake, through the heater and out onto the floor. Because of the angle the air intake beneath the chrome grill presents to the outside world, this seems fairly inevitable to me. Is this just a bit of iffy design, or am I completely wrong and missing something?

My car lives outside, when i first got it i had very wet footwells. The mojority was coming in through the lower corner of the windscreen, this was solved with some extra sealant around the edge.
I still get some which appears to come it through the doors, but i took the other option of always using a TSSC storm cover (see previous threads on car covers) to try and keep the worst off, this works pretty well.
cheers.....Andy

John,
I don't recall the heater cold air path being an issue for water ingress, but I can't picture what stops it either, so maybe you are right. However, a place that can contribute to water in the front footwells is a leak down the wiper spindles.
This can be fixed by using new rubber washers (or pieces cut off an old inner tube)between the chrome bezel and the body, often assisted by judicious application of Dum Dum.

I would suspect windscreen seal or wiper spindles before the heater intake. Another possibility is the join between wing and scuttle or the bottom of the A-post, but both of these point to additional holes due to corrosion that can't be seen from outside.

Mine leaksfrom both corners of the windscreen rubber and judging the repairs to both front footwells above the outrigger has for sometime but as usual the previous owner repaired the affect but not the cause!
The windscreen will be done hopefully sometime this week when my local guy has a free afternoon as it takes about 4 hours and he has quoted me £60 for removal and refitting due to this time.
One thing to check to see if it is the windscreen rubber is leaking isyour parcel shelf wet or going mouldy!
Remove your carpets otherwise you'll be paying for these and the rusty footwells to be replaced including the rear one's as the water soaks through from the front carpets to the rear!

Check the carpet uprights at the front of the doors, if wet then your problem is the rubber section that runs in front of the quarter light frame, the piece that is stuck onto the 'A ' post about 15" long. You should not be able to see through the joint at this point. This rubber deflects the water out to the sill.

If you are doing your screen make sure you have a new rubber surround. The guy that fitted mine preferred a 'Bains' make. Hope you are successful .

Wow, lots of options to look into - thanks everyone. We'll see how I get on at the weekend.

Well, after some investigation, it would seem that my unplanned footbath has nothing to do with the rain and everything to do with a leaking heater matrix. Looks like I'm going to be busy next weekend.

Hi John - I've just caught this thread so probably I am too late to contribute anything helpful. Before I forget, if your leak has been caused by a leaking heater matrix would you not have spotted some coolant coloured water in the foot wells?
I think there are probably very few Stags these days that - if standing out in persistent rain - will not leak. Obviously those that have been completely restored should be exempt from this comment, but it's asking a great deal from a 30/38 year old vehicle to remain impervious to the weather after all these years.
Most of you guys wouldn't know if your Stag leaked because you keep them nicely tucked up in your heated garages during the worst of the weather. I'm only jealous because one of mine has to stay outside whatever!
