What is under your new paint job.

I had my car painted about 2 years ago now but the boot lid started to show signs of the paint sinking. I bought the boot lid of e-bay at the time of the respray as my old one was past it. It came in primer and looked OK so I assume the paint shop just did what they needed to apply the top coat.

It has annoyed me for a while now so after some advice I have taken it back to bare metal and a kind friend is going to paint it for me.

This is what I found after 3 hours with a tin of Nitromores and a DA sander and 80 grit disc, there must have been a good 1mm or 2mm of filler, primer and paint on it in some places.

    Ian. :X

Wow ! That's pretty awful, it looks more than two years old though so I guess it's the handiwork of the guy that sold it to you. I hate Nitromors with a will, but there's no substitute, even with gloves I seem to get burnt. Martin.

shame to find it like that underneath - but i doubt yours is the only car with secrets hiding under the surface!

The thing I find hard to understand is how got like that in the first place. it must have had water under the paint or been really scabby, the inner frame and No plate lamp panel are perfect, it was Ziebarted from new and still has the little black plugs in it. On the plus side there is no perforation through the metal, so can be treated and filled properly.

I can sympathise, I had my SS Sill covers removed and the sills painted and underseal applied a few months back. Today I thought I saw some scabbing and true enough, when I applied the pressure washer I was able to remove underseal to reveal bare metal, they had neglected to prime & paint before applying the underseal, not impressed.

Hi all, just thought I would post an update on my boot lid.

Here it is after I spent ages with a wire brush attachment on the polisher/sander and gave it a coat of Kurust.
