Car will not start after 3 month idle

Went to start the Stag yesterday as it was a nice sunny (but cold) day - after a 3 month layup. I had disconnected the battery prior to my abandonment - but connecting it back up showed full power available.

Turned the ignition and immediately noticed that there was no ticking from over my right shoulder, so assume that the Fuel pump has gone faulty - sure enough although the car turned over there was no sign of it firing.

    1) Am I right in my assumption that the fuel pump is kanckered?

    2) If I order a pump from Peter at LD Parts - is it likely to be the right one?

    3) Is it the sort of repair that a lazy pen pusher who doesn't really get dirt under his fingernails (me) could do?

Hi dave, its always worth taking off o/s boot trim and give the pump a gentle tap,at least the first time.John

Probably the points in the pump , a tap often works. Make sure there is some voltage getting to the pump, if not it is possibly the inertia switch, they can be dismantled and cleaned. Unlikely the pump is knackered.

          Hi Dave

Yes the LD Parts pump at about £44 is fine.

Dave no use now, but I work away for 1 month at a time and always get my son to start the old girl up halfway through my month, let it get up to temperature and move it in and out of the garage. Not a lot I know and I have been told that it's not so good a practice, but in three years of ownership it has never refused to fire once, so obviously I have kept that routine.

I do this as well; I can't see what's wrong with it provided you let the car get nice a warm. not a quick five minutes idle

Sound's like you've having the same issues as me discussed here:

stupid point, but have you checked the fuel pump fuse? - often its the simplest thing in my experience.................

The fuel pump is not on a fused curcuit. Its fed via the ignition which again is not fused. However, following on from the logic of an electrical problem it could be that the inertia switch needs resetting or its contacts cleaning inside. If that is not permitting current to flow then the fuel pump will be dead.

Pull back the carpet in the boot and place a voltmeter on the live feed to the pump and see if you get a reading with the ignition switch on. If you don't, bypass the inertia switch by placing a piece of wire across the two contacts and then recheck for a live voltage at the pump.

                    Good luck

I remember a time back in the eighties when a plethora of "mechanics" were gathered round a Stagfor hours trying to start her. Plugs were cleaned checked, points, petrol, condenser, youname it they done dusted and checked/replaced it.

They evensaida prayer! ( joke), but could not spark her up.....Then in walked an unassuming young man took the inertia switch, which was loosely hanging upside-down, tapped it about, secured it, and started her first turn of the key!.

                      Sukh.

Who was that young man, will he turn up again in times of need?

I often wondered if it was Russ (kryten).
