    Front Suspension Ready to Fit

I am very impressed with some of the projects being detailed on here, such as the full body restorations, engine rebuilds and EFI development.

This is what I have been pottering about with for the past few weeks. All ready to fit now, when it gets a bit warmer and I can summon up the enthusiam for swapping it all over with the bits on my Stag.

Suspension legs are fitted with Spax, non-adjustable gas inserts, new powder-coated springs, poly bushes and serviced swivels. Steering rack stripped and fitted with new seals, gaitors and track-rod ends. Front crossmember and anti-roll barblasted andpainted. New ball-joints on track control arms. Brake calipers stripped and new pistons/seals fitted. New fasteners all round.

No excuse not to do the decorating for SWMBO now.........

P.S. Have you thought about swapping out those dust guards for a pair of shiney stainless steel ones?

Yes, Bruce. I did. But couldn't really justify the £45. Gave mine a thorough seeing to with a wire cup brush in an angle-grinder and several coats of Smooth Hammerite.

Looking good Dave. What paint have you used for the cross member, anti roll bar, sump etc. after blasting? I have all mine to do to turn my shell into a rolling shell and was thinking most of those parts would be powder coated.

Also, for all, is gloss black appropriate for am original style restoration or was satin / matt standard?

                  Hi Nigel,

If you are interested in original finish, then probably a satin finish would be appropriate. I have used Hammerite smooth for everything. I did consider powder coating, but when I got a quote from the place up the road, I couldn't justify it. I'm not looking for concourse, or a 20-year life. If the original bits have lasted this long, then what I have done should see me for a few years............

The bits you see in the picture abovewereremoved from my old Stag when I did the same job for that one7 years ago. But then I didn't get new fasteners, I just tarted up the ones I had. The pictue below was taken in March 2004.

when i did mine a couple of years ago i considered the same thing - seemed expensive to me as well - i stuck with some de-rusted/painted normal ones

                      Hi Dave

Fair enough I don't recall paying as much as that for the pair I purchased via Ebay in 2010.

Having a spare set of parts certainly helps with a task such as overhauling the suspension becuase the car is only out of action for a short period of time. I have a similiar spare set in my attic although I am hoping not to need them for many years to come

                        Hi Dave,

That's exactly the job I'm doing on mine right now (using some of the bits I got from you), except you're ahead of me. Trouble is, I've got a nasty feeling that mine's not going to look anything like as good as yours

Just collected mine after getting it all sodablasted and, like you, the cost of powder coating put me off so I was planning to paint it with POR-15. Unlike you, I did bite the bullet and I've got the Stainless Steel brake shields to go back on.

I haven't taken my rack off, but seeing your pic has made me decide to do so now.

Just a couple of questions, if I may - how did you get yours stripped and what did you use to finish yourcalipers? Also, where did you get all your new fasteners? I've got mine from ANG Triumph and they seemed pretty good value.

                        Cheers

                        Julian

Just thought the same, but checked my invoices for 2010 eBay and found out that I paid £48 for them :shock::shock:

Can't recall what I was smoking at the time, but it must have been pretty good weed!
