Changed plugs from Champion to NGK

Just changed the plugs from NGK bp5es to Champion N12Y.

It runs a heck of a lot smoother and theres no rise or reduction in power however when you first turn the key its as if battery is drained and although it starts its a slow start. It was fine before I changed plugs however as I say the car runs smoother now

is there any reason for this?

Just a thought, were the old plugs relatively loose.
A long shot, but if nothing else has changed,I wonder if you have better compression if the new plugs have sealed properly in their seats, which would make the engine harder to turn over.

    Cheers

I can't think what else it might be if nothing else has altered. Is there a chance the distributor moved when you changed your leads,it wouldn't need to turn far (advanced too much) to give the impression the starter was struggling.

Yes,electronic ignition is basically just a box of tricks that allows you to replace the points in the distributor with an optical sensor, which makes it more reliable/efficient,The distributor is the part beneath the cap where your plug leads fit.

Have a look here for a better explanation.

I'm not sure what the difference is, or if it's relevent but I'm using BP5E without the S, as recommended by Ldparts.

Edit BTW the thread title and the post contradict, are you now running NGK or Champion

what a plonker the title is wrong I did use NGK and now run Champion. I changed as I;d read that some cars run rough on the BP5ES

                cheers for the explanations

FYI - The BP5E has a 'v' groove in the electrode, the BP5ES electrode is completely flat (when new )

So how old were the NGKs? Maybe you just needed new plugs and the different brands are much the same.:?

I went out earlier and every time I started the car and drove offshe was jerky till I pulled choke out and then she was fine again, I was going round shops so little 5 min bursts coupled with 5 min stops

from my dolmite sprint owning days, i can reacall - this must be early 90s, a few had champion plugs fail and i think physically break. so at the time people steered to NGK. Did this ever affect stags? assume old news now and long since fixed? I think Champion have changed their factory since then.
