    Salt on the roads

    Hi all

It's been windy and dry here in the east and has been like that for the last couple of days, but on wednesday evening the roads where gritted.

Can salt be a problem for your carwhen the roads are bone dry or will I have to wash it down after a spin?

Nib, don't know about anyone else but there is no way I will take my car out with salt on the road dry or otherwise. After the nightmare I had getting rid of it I certainly don't want anything that will accelerate it's return.

My thought is that if there is salt on the road that **** is bound to get into some crevice in granulated form ,and once it gets wet it will breed again.

Obviously there are those who will disagree and this is probably my own paranoia

They are cars, they are built for driving, if you want an ornament then I suggest a vase might be more appropriate :dude:

completely agree....... just drive it and deal with the maintenance (cosmetic or mechanical) just like you do with any other car

My garage keeps telling me not to worry that I can't use mine at the moment, as taking it out on salty roads will eat it alive.

Personally I think they are for driving and would take it out on a dry day at this time of the year no problem - but I do appreciate the concerns of those who don't want to risk it.

I would have taken mine out for a run today on the local ungritted country roads but there's a ruddy great skip in front of my garage!

Nice one Bruce - I should have seen that one coming! :P

My avatar's a bit out of date - I sold the MG over a year ago. Great car and a lot of fun but a bit small and flimsy.

The skip's there as I've just hadthe concrete base done for a 10' x 18' workshop I'm having erected this week.:dude: Plenty of room then for all those impending Stag jobs!

Hiya Mark, salt's inactive when it's dry, but as Moraystag says, once wet it encourages corrosion. It's not quite the devil it's made out to be, if your car's properly waxed up and washed regularly it'll be fine. It will only exacerbate existing corrosion or bare metal. One of our guys hasn't moved the car for 2 months, when he pulled the cover off last week he found the rear bumper covered in heavy rust, condensation. I drive my old girl all year round and it's not hard to keep ahead of it. A certain degree of paranoia here, but we all live with that. Martin.
