As part of a strip down I took the gearbox out of my Mk1 auto this evening and discovered that around the transmission tunnel was some smooth faced, (sorry can't think of any other way to describe it) insulation which is around 1cm thick.
Has anyone else come across this?
I know the car was previously restored some years ago, before the rust worm was allowed to get hold again, so this may be from the resto. If this is the case, I'd welcome views on:
a) Whether it is worth putting it back when the bits go back on, or is it's sound insulation value on the transmission tunnel limited? - Ultimately I plan a ZF box to be fitted.
b) Is it potentially a(nother) rust trap? - I would have thought only a limited amount of water would get above the gear box from surface spray but evaporation from the heat of the engine/transmission hasn't anywhere to go.
