Drive shafts

Hi,

I have a drive train problem when approaching 50MPH I get a noise like woom woomto just past 60MPH then it seems to fade out.

Prop shaft seems to be ok, but offside drive shaft hardy appears to be worn so think I will change shaft and hub complete with exchange units.

Looking for best place to buy any ideas please.

Les Clark has some S/H ones on E-Bay at the moment, I bought a pair from him a year ago to upgrade to the circlip type. No connection etc, but what he sells has always been good for me.

Has this problem just started, can you give us some more information as I doubt it is the shaft.

Is this problem under acceleration or over run or just driving along?

Are you manual or auto?

Andrew, I think he's looking at the problem being the rear hub bearings and a complete shaft assy being a quick fix.

Car is 72 Auto noise comes in under normal load, Ithought it may be bearings so fitting recon shaft and hub would be easiest way to fix. Unfortunately cannot do these things myself any more.

Where abouts are you? Its a shame you cant juts borrow one as they are easy and quick to swap over and then you will know, If you buy a new hub, you will have to break the outer u/j and fit a new one. If then the noise is till there, you will have wasted time and money.

Has this noise always been there or suddenly appeared? Is it there from cold or when it gets warm?

Noise there for a while now getting louder ,noise arrives as soon as reach 50

Here's another one to throw into the mix.

Some years ago (Twenty to be precise)a workcolleague bought a secondhand sierra (Hold on I coming to it ).He complained about a wom,wom,woming noise coming from the rear.

He was technically minded and did all sorts to alleviate the problem and substantial cost.All to no avail. His son at the time had a mate who worked next to a quick fit type garage and in the lunch hour they played football against said garage....are you still there ?..good.

He mentioned this problem to one of the old boys who worked there.He suggested that it could be one or both of the tyres as,apparently if tyres are forced to screech to a halt or are left standing in one position for a length of time a flat will appear and cause the wom,wom,symtom.

My colleague changed the tyres and low and behold the noise disappeared.Makes you think dunnit ?

May be someone has one you could borrow :shock:

Can you rule out the diff?

If someone is going to do it for you, then just buy the following and get them to do your own unit. It will save messing around with a surcharge and postage for a heavy item
