    Engine options

I have a 32000 mile engine that was not running and sat idle for 10 years before I bought the car for restoration.

Now that I'm ready to get the engine done I have two options:

    1) get the existing, original, low mileage engine stripped and rebuilt - keeping all nos. original on the history of the car

    2) just get an exchange for an already rebuilt engine

Just to say on the engine I have, there is no record that it's previously been rebuilt, but equally none that it hasn't! - so a bit of a gamble, although I would suspect it hadn't been from what I can make of the history.

What would the consenus on here be?

If it were mine I would get it rebuilt. That way, you still have the bragging rights over having the original engine in the car, the numbers will match and you will be able to have some say in what goes into your rebuilt engine and get to pick who builds it for you.

      No question - rebuild.

You should have set up a poll.

Deffo rebuild mate, keep everything original adds to the value and gives you the bragging rights as well.

32000 miles no brainer rebuild everytime

Totally agree - or else fit an exchange engine and sell me your 32k one for £50

          Cheers

Is that true? I wasn't aware that in Stags the engine and commission numbers matched (like on many other cars)

My Commission Number is 31581 and the engine number is 25492. Has my engine then be replaced by a previous owner?

I don't think they do (ever ??) match, but I took it thatDave meant matching up with the log book instead.

Anyway, mine are just 23 apart: chassis LD 43620 and engine LF 43597, so pretty close and confirmed by a Heritage certificate.

Hi, Yes keep your engine, but to stop delay i would get running engine and drop it in for the time being.

This way you have the best of both worlds.

                Thanks

Ifthe engineonly had done 32,000 miles, many of the original parts may stillbe re-useable; they are more trustworthy than pattern parts.

Yep, he means the numbers will continue match with the original docs....... we are not talking about a 'matching numbers' Ford worth $300K

to answer the original question - i would go down the rebuild path...... that way you know what was in there and what has been replaced/renewed. If you strip it and find it is terminallystuffed go to plan B of the alternative recon unit

Phew! Thought I'd just found another skeleton in my Stag cupboard! (no engine number on German docs) Thanks!

Definately rebuild the original unless it is rusted solid. Most of the problems I have found when rebuilding engines stem from the problems caused by people doing half a job when rebuilding. Also things like jackshaft bearing wear and cam follower bore wear are expensive things to put right and less likely to be a problem on a low mileage engine.

One engine I rebuilt had one rusty bore but the pistons were virtually new, so I had that bore linered at a cost of about £90 (from memory) which saved me £250 for a set of pistons plus the cost of a rebore

Yes, I did mean match the original docs and Factory Production records. I doubt anyone has an engine and Chassis No that are the same!
