    Quill shaft removal

    Hi folks

After a couple of nights under the car, I've managed to remove the diff which is now sitting on my bench. The front extension is off, large central nut removed, drive flange removedand the circlipin front of the bearing is out.

Next I obviously want the bearing out. I'm assuming this is driven out from behind but before this can be done surely I need toextract the quill shaft from the rear of the extension.

How is this achieved...I don't want to start thumping things without a bit of advice:? andhave I missed something?

    Many thanks

    Dave

    Hi Dave

You use the quill shaft to knock the bearing out. Once the bearing is clear of the housing, remove it from the shaft and then pull the shaft back through the housing. Hey presto.

Thanks Bruce....I'll give that a go soon. What happens to the second circlip (the one I can't see) during this process?

      Regards

It might get a bit bent when the larger cross section of the quill shaft hits it. Depends on how hard you go. As I suggested to you last week, fit new cirlips!

          Thanks Bruce

It's out now. Had to do a bit of bashing both ways with a lump of wood and hammer.

Will attemptremoval of theoil seal tonight....looks like a I'm going to destroy it in the process:?

              Thank you Stuart.

Don's stuff is in my favourites file (sad I know but he does do a good description). No mention of a gasket though and, as there wasn't one in there when I took to extension off,I'm guessing no

yes you are right no gasket I put a little RTV silicone on the joint face, the extension is prone to cracking and some people have added gussets to the housing. The original seal is leather and I believe Chris Wittor has them I used a viton double lip seal on mine with no problems.

                cheers Stuart

                  Hi Dave,

The quill shaft can run eccentric by tens of thou on the diff splined pinion. Before you fit the quill shaft in the housing (or the oil seal in the ditff),try it in different positions on the splines and check with a Dial Test Indicator. Once you find the best position mark quill shaft and splines so you get it back in the same position when assembling.

The oil seal is a pig to remove.A removal tool from Machine Mart is only a few quid and money well spent.

                  Mark.

I also drilled a small hole in the bottom of the extension to stop any leaked oil building up in there and washing the grease out of the bearing.
